DSS, POLICE REVEAL SHIITES IS A THREAT TO NIGERIA'S SECURITY [SEE WHY]

Security operatives in Nigeria say the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) wing of the Shiite sect constitute a security threat to the nation.

The Nigeria Police and Department of State Service were speaking at separate submissions at the on-going Kaduna State Commission of Inquiry into the Shiite/Army clash of December 12, 2015 in Zaria.

Both agencies asked for measures to tackle the group before it causes havoc similar to the Boko Haram insurgency in the country, TV360 gathered.

The Shiite Muslims had earlier filed a suit against the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigerian Army and the Attorney General of the Federation over the continuous detention of their leader, Sheik Ibraheem El-Zakzaky.

Some days ago, the Kaduna State Government said 347 persons were killed during the December 12 Shiite/Nigerian Army clash in Zaria.

Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Balarabe Lawal, disclosed this in a government submission at the ongoing Public Hearing of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into the clash.

The burial of the victims was done in secret, and this is the first time the state government was explaining how the remains of the killed shiite members were disposed.

Lawal, who led a six-man government witnesses before the panel, said the corpses were committed into a single grave (mass burial) at the Mando area jointly supervised by the state government officials and about 40 men of the Nigerian Army, led by an officer in the rank of a Major.

The SSG said 189 suspects were being prosecuted for alleged involvement in the Zaria crisis while one suspect died in custody.

He said the state government received several security reports from the State Security Service (SSS) on the activities of the movement.

According to him, several measures were taken to address the situation before it finally escalated into the clash with the Nigerian Army.

The army previously said the Shiite Muslims had tried to assassinate its chief of staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai, when members of the sect blocked his convoy; a claim the sect has since denied.

In January, the army chief of staff told the inquiry that his soldiers had acted appropriately in the raid.
