| Biafra Leader Nnamdi Kanu remanded in prison custody for treason |
Kanu is standing trial for treason, management of unlawful group, smuggling of radio transmitters and firearms.
In his application, Kanu had asked the court to determine whether the ruling by Justice John Tsoho of the Federal High Court to deny him bail was not an aberration to his fundamental rights.
He also asked the court to determine if the judge’s decision not to grant him bail due to his dual citizenship was the right one.
In its ruling however, a three member-panel, led by Justice Abdul Aboki, held that the lower court was right in denying Kanu’s bail due to his dual citizenship.
The judges ruled that if granted bail, Kanu might return to his country and laws in that country may hinder the process of the trial.
The court also ruled that the charges against Kanu and the other defendants were deemed as a national threat thus a bail application cannot be entertained.
