Dalung Lied; He Never Visited Us In USA – Dream Team VI

Members of the Nigeria Olympic football team while accepting the apology of Solomon Dalung, the Youth and Sports Development Minister, however said he never visited the team in Atlanta.

“Where did he visit us? We never saw him while we were in Atlanta. I think they just issued a press release that he came to see us, we never saw him,” Vanguard quoted a source as saying.

“We have accepted his apology and are happy that they paid us our camp allowance for 11 days. We were in camp for more than a month in Nigeria and Atlanta, so they should pay us all the allowances as well as the bonus for the two matches we have played,” the team member that would not want his name mentioned added.

Buhari Didn’t Sign A Padded Budget – Presidency

The Presidency through the Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Senator Ita Enang and his counterpart in the House of Representatives, Hon. Ismail Kawu, has said that President Muhammadu Buhari did not sign a padded budget.

This was disclosed after an over three-hour meeting with the APC leadership, insisting that the budget signed by the President was not a padded budget.

The SSA said: “I am here on the invitation of the leadership of the APC with my colleague to bring answers to issues raised by the party on the 2016 Appropriation and we have been with the party for a little over three hours. We have given explanations to them on every issue and told them that there was nothing, to our knowledge, like padding of the budget.

“The budget as assented to by Mr. President is the budget as passed by the National Assembly and that is the budget being executed.

“But as of now, the party is handling it as a domestic issue, and all of us are enjoined not to make public comment on the details because the matter is still under consideration.

“So, that is what we will want to say for now, we will not want to go into the details of it so that we will not breach the ethics of the party, the directives of the party or pre-empt anything or any outcome of the party investigation.”

He added that “we came here as persons who works as liaison officers on the budget because the party had questions for us and we came to make clarifications on the issues raised.

“We have made those clarifications and would not want to draw any conclusion. Please let us not go too far by mentioning any office. Let it be that the two of us appeared before the party.

“In all our years of legislative engagement, we are yet to find in the legislative lexicon the word ‘padding’. When the budget is presented before the legislature, the legislature is to consider the budget and pass as they deem fit.

“So what the legislature pass becomes the appropriation upon accent. Therefore, any word which is yet to crystallize in legislative lexicon, you cannot hear us mention it.”

Jonathan Using Avengers To Make Nigeria Ungovernable For Buhari — MEND

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, MEND, in a statement signed by Jomo Gbomo has said that former President Goodluck Jonathan is a grand patron of new militant group, the Niger Delta Avengers.

The full text of the statement obtained by Sahara Reporters reads:
“MEND cannot hold brief for the RNDA, which pointedly accused Mr. Jonathan of complicity in fueling the ongoing Niger Delta crisis and patronising the NDA, apparently for political reasons.

“We are, however, quick to point out the fact that the RNDA has merely vindicated MEND’s belief and conviction that the former President and his cronies, who lost the 2015 presidential election, were using the illegal and treasonable NDA platform to destabilise President Buhari’s government.

“Indeed, the problem in the Niger Delta today has nothing to do with the current administration of President Muhammadu Buhari. Far from it! The problem is simply the failure of Mr. Jonathan to address the root issues confronting the region when he was at the helms of affairs.

”Even though he was from the impoverished region and had, by his own admission in numerous electioneering campaigns, experienced the utter poverty and abject neglect of the region foisted by successive Nigerian governments and the international oil companies since the discovery of oil in 1958 at Oloibiri (a few metres away from his native Otuoke) in Bayelsa State, Mr. Jonathan disappointingly frittered away the opportunity to rescue his people when the Nigerian Presidency fortuitously landed on his laps, virtually on a platter of gold.

“For six whole years, Mr. Jonathan was busy drinking, making merry and generally chasing shadows at the State House. Such a fellow deserves to be ostracised from the assembly of reasonable men; because the Nigerian Presidency might never come back to the Niger Delta region as cheap as it came to Mr. Jonathan; perhaps, in the next 100 years.

“Lest we forget, MEND was at the forefront of the armed struggle back in 2006/2007 which forced the then Government of President Olusegun Obasanjo to consider the option of drafting an Ijaw into the mainstream of Nigerian politics. That was how the perpetually timid and naïve Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan became Vice-President and later, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. When he assumed the reins as President, he did the unthinkable; he tracked down perceived MEND leaders and promptly got them imprisoned on a trumped-up charge of attempt to assassinate him.

“Up until today, Mr. Jonathan is still suffering from an assassination paranoia complex.”

The group added that a substantial portion of Jonathan’s statement, “unfortunately, dwelt on judicial matters which are pending in various courts in Nigeria and South Africa.”

Three Nigerians Create Records At Rio Olympics

At least three Nigerian athletes in the ongoing Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games created records of sorts that will be cherished in a longtime to come.

The trio with records are two table tennis stars, Segun Toriola and Aruna Quadri as well as Rower, Chierika Ukogu .

The 41 year-old Toriola had his 7th appearance in the current Games, equaling the table tennis record. This has made him the most capped African Olympian.

Nigeria’s Aruna Quadri set another continental record after the 2014 ITTF star became the first African to reach the quarterfinals of men’s singles event at Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Ukogu on the other hand, qualified for top classification in the rowing event in Rio.

She is Nigeria’s first ever rower in the Olympics to have got that far, placing fifth in the third quarter final of the Women’s single sculls after clocking a time of 7:54.44 secs.

She will now participate in the semi finals C/D 1 event on Wednesday. This is the 23-year-old’s first ever appearance in the Olympics.

It Is Regrettable That APC Has Failed To Provide The Change Promised – Agbaje

Mr Jimi Agbaje, a former governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party for Lagos state in the 2015 election, has promised that he will lead the party back to winning ways if elected chairman of the party at the Portharcourt Convention.

Agbaje while speaking with journalists noted that PDP gave ''way so that Nigerians can test what other parties have in stock. But it is regrettable that party has failed to provide the change promised. Every youth in Nigeria will like to see PDP reformed, and the reformation has started."

He said: "We accept that mistakes were made in the past in the PDP, especially with our internal democracy. So we have to go back to the position of the founding fathers of our party on internal democracy

"And that means that we have to go back to our constitution. That is very important. We have to be more all inclusive as we have been thus far. It is about bringing people nearer rather than sending them far away from the party. Everybody must feel to be part of this party.

"What I bring to the table is that I am not a member of any faction or any tendencies. I am in a position to talk to everybody, to ensure that if you love the PDP, then it is time to come back to the zone. I will appeal to those who feel very strongly to join us because Nigeria cannot make the progress it deserves without a viable opposition and that PDP is going to provide that opposition as an alternative government and in a responsible manner.

"We must understand what is playing out. The party is very clear, what the party zoned is that the National Chairmanship is to the South. It is the south on its own now that is running to see if it can get some measure of consensus.

"It is already very difficult to get consensus under circumstances where everybody feels that he is qualified. The beauty of democracy is that you must be able, and shouldn't be afraid to contest.

"What matters is that a level playing field is created and we shouldn't bring this idea that we must have consensus. No! It is not even good to have consensus all the time. Let us have robust competition, because competition always brings out a better solution and I think that is important.

"Now it is for those in the south to decide what they want. If they say it is the Southwest, so be it. If you feel you can run against the tide, nobody will stop you. We must continue to go back to the constitution, the constitution does not give you the power to exclude anybody. When you exclude you create tension. If you say look, this is what we think is best, if you do not agree, then, get into the field and let us run this race" he said.

President Buhari-Led Government Has Failed Nigeria – Pastor Dikwa

Pastor Kallamu Musa Ali Dikwa, Executive Director, Voice of Northern Christian Movement, in a statement he issued in Kaduna, expressed dismay that President Muhammadu Buhari has failed Nigerians with his change agenda.

He noted that, “During the Buhari and Osibanjo’s APC Presidential Campaign 2015, I sacrificed my life and time based on General Buhari’s promises to Nigerians specifically in fighting corruption, terrorism, uniting Nigerians, employment and job creation for the youth and the boosting of the economy of the country.

“So far, President Buhari has made remarkable achievements in fighting corruption and terrorism among some of the Nigerian elites, but without making a holistic approach to the issues mentioned.

“May I ask about the third promise, that is, uniting Nigerians? What is happening now especially in the areas of appointments and employment? We can clearly see the kind of one-sided appointments with about 80 per cent Muslims.

“For instance, Comptroller General of customer, Comptroller General of Immigration, commandant NSCDC, Comptroller General of Prison Services, Chairman EFCC, Director of DSS, Accountant General of the Federation, Chief of Army Staff, Chief of Air-Staff, Chief of Staff and National Security Adviser.

“Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Minister of Interior, Minister of Defence, Minister of Education, DG NYSC, AMCON Boss, NCC Chief, NPA Chief, DG NTA and IGP, are all Muslims.

“In addition to this, there has been some employment to the Department of Security Service and Economics and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC), which is also one-sided, favouring the Muslims over the Christians in Northern Region.

“Let me also mention the replacements in both the immigration and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps by Muslims against the Northern Christians.”

He noted that at the moment, the entire country was already ravished with hunger and famine, adding, “A situation where masses are buying a measure of rice over N550.00 and a bag of fertilizer about N10,000.00.”

“I want Mr. President to know that we did not sacrificed our lives in bringing him into power to come and oppress and kill our people with hunger. I must tell Mr. President that we cannot continue like this, else, we are going to change the “CHANGE.”

“When I blew up the whistle of N7 billion bribe given to Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), by the Former President, Goodluck Jonathan, one of the security agents nearly killed me just because of APC and Buhari, no APC leader that stood with me during my trauma in the hands of the DSS.

“People accused me that APC governors gave me money and I’m now challenging the APC leaders. If any of them gives me one naira to work for APC, let that person come out and prove it to the whole world. It is on record that APC leaders deceived Nigerian masses to vote the party in order to achieve their own personal interest,” he observed.

14 Months After, FG Yet To Fix Refineries

By Michael Eboh

Fourteen months after the advent of the current administration, the three refineries belonging to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, are yet to be fixed, with the refineries producing an average of 47,553 barrels of crude oil per day (BPD) over the last one year.

This is a far cry from their combined installed capacity of 445,000 barrels of crude oil per day (BPD). Port Harcourt Refining Company, which is made up of two refineries, has a combined capacity of 210,000 barrels per day (BPD); while Kaduna Refining & Petrochemical Company Limited (KRPC) and Warri Refining & Petrochemical Company Limited (WRPC) have installed capacities of 110,000 BPD and 125,000 BPD respectively.

A document obtained from the NNPC, yesterday, revealed that the refineries are still undergoing repairs, rehabilitation and Turnaround Maintenance (TAM), a situation that ensured that local refining capacity remained below commercial threshold.

According to the document, the NNPC said refineries rehabilitation is on course to address the perennial shortage of fuel in the country, noting that this was in addition to co-locating of smaller refineries to leverage on the existing facilities and boost the nation’s refining capacity from 445,000 barrels per day to 650,000 barrels per day.

This is continuation of the trends witnessed in previous administrations, where the refineries were subjected to unending repairs and TAMs, with billions of dollars allocated on a yearly basis for such rehabilitations.

However, efforts to get the spokesperson of the NNPC, Mr. Muhammed Garba-Deen to comment on the never-ending repairs of the refineries and their current status proved abortive, as they refused to respond to text messages sent to their phones.

However, the NNPC, in its Financial and Operations Report for the Month of June 2016 released weekend, stated that about 75.26 per cent of the total Domestic Crude Oil supply for May 2016 was utilized via Direct-Sale-Direct-Purchase (DSDP). The DSDP was introduced by the NNPC to replace the crude oil for product exchange arrangement, also known as crude oil swap, and the Offshore Processing Agreement (OPA).

The NNPC allocates 445,000 barrels of crude oil daily to the refineries for local consumption, majority of which are processed outside the country, based on the arrangements in place at that point in time; while only an insignificant portion is processed by the refineries, based on their capacities at any point in time.

Also, the NNPC disclosed that total crude oil processed by the three refineries, KRPC, PHRC and WRPC, for the month of June 2016 was 225,770 metric tonne (MT) and equivalent of 1,655,345.99 barrels. This translates to an average production of 55,178 barrels daily.

Out of the total of 225,770 MT processed by the refineries in June, the NNPC stated that they produced 133,991 MT of finished Petroleum products, an equivalent of 982,422 BPD. This translates to an average daily output of 32,747 BPD of petroleum products.

The NNPC blamed the poor performance of the refineries on crude pipeline vandalism in the Niger Delta region coupled with on-going Refineries revamp; noting, however, that the three refineries continue to operate at minimal capacity.

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Mr. Ibe Kachikwu, had on different occasions stated that the refineries returned to production, while at one point, he said the country needs about $700 million to upgrade and fix the refineries.

However, the recently appointed Group Managing Director of the NNPC, Mr. Maikanti Baru, had a few days ago, stated that the corporation would collaborate with the Spanish National Oil Company, REPSOL, to improve the technical capacities of the refineries.

Baru hinted that the NNPC might consider bringing in petroleum products to the country from REPSOL to help meet domestic demand of the product, while efforts are made to fix the refineries.
According to him, NNPC as an integrated Oil and Gas Company is currently undergoing transformation which includes increasing its refining capacity.

He said, “As you know, we have challenges with our refineries and with REPSOL refining about 900,000 barrels of crude oil per day, we can collaborate on that, going forward.

“While we are fixing our refineries, we also have the opportunity to bring in more petroleum products into the country to meet our domestic needs.”

SOULFOOD: Don't Be Desperate For Spiritual Gifts AMARA VAN-LARE Cautions.

Nowadays so many people put up 'a show' of gifts in men just to impress and deceive others but Amara Van-Lare is cautioning them to "STOP doing things they shouldn't do and manipulating people or things just to be called a prophet or healing minister."
Hear her out:
Did you know that miracles, prophecies, and speaking in tongues are not the only gifts from the Holy Spirit? Administration, helps, teaching, and discerning of spirits are all strong gifts. Stop doing things you shouldn't do and manipulating people or things just to be called a prophet or healing minister.
I have the gift of helps and discerning of spirits and I'm so satisfied functioning in these ministries. Is that your prophetic ministry really from the Holy Spirit? Are you sure you are not one of the many preachers who are into necromancy? Don't be desperate for spiritual gifts, just walk with the Holy Spirit and He will give you the ministry ordained for you. Never desire to become another, it may look enticing now, it feels good now, but every Satan's apple has worms inside.

1 Corinthians 12:7-10King James Version (KJV)

7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.

8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;

9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;

10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:

1 Corinthians 12:28-30King James Version (KJV)

28 And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.

29 Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles?

30 Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?

DAILY SPRINGS: Reasons Why You Should Stay Away From Palm-wine

By Emmanuel Chiedu SB |

Palm-wine is an alcoholic drink gotten from the sap of various species of palm trees like coconut palms, date palms, Palmyra. It is also known as Toddy-palm.

Palm-wine is a very popular drink in Nigeria, it is also common in places like Ghana, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, and some countries in Asia.

In Nigeria in particular, palm-wine is used as Kola for visitors and also used to perform traditional rites during traditional events like marriages.

Many believe it is good for the body because of its many nutritional values, but that should not be the reason for turning a blind eye to its many dangers to the body.

While the benefits may include that it is good for the eyes, because it has been found to have a high content of Vitamins A which helps to improve the eye sight, and many other nutritional values. Some of its disadvantages will make you to consider quitting palm-wine.

Some of its bad side includes the following:

* The ethanol content in palm-wine can affect liver function and lipid metabolism in utero of a pregnant female.

* Palm-wine could give rise to neurological symptoms like affecting body rigidity and muscle contraction.

* It causes damage of liver accumulating fat in the liver.

* Palm-wine decreases blood clotting factor, leading to uncontrolled bleeding.

* It also can weaken heart muscle and ability to pump blood.

* Palm-wine adversely affect blood pressure and increases risk of heart attacks.

* Lastly, note that Fermented palm-wine contains a high percentage of alcohol, which is probably higher than what is found in some of the alcoholic beverages we drink. Since the lifespan of palm-wine is only 12 hours, that means what we mostly have is fermented palm-wine which destroys the kidney, liver and other systems in the body. This can also cause hypertension.

Nigeria Needs Change Agents – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday in his tribute to the deceased pioneer Director-General of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, Maj.-Gen. Timothy Ogundeko, said Nigeria is in dire need of people who will render selfless service that could change the tide of the country for good.

Buhari, in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, made the remark describing the deceased as a pacesetter in strategic leadership training.

According to the statement, “The President affirms that with his tireless efforts and foresight, Gen. Ogundeko transformed the Nigerian Army Education Corps for the benefit of the Service and the nation; and his legendary role in the establishment of Command Secondary Schools is well appreciated.

“President Buhari trusts that the vision of the deceased for a united and prosperous Nigeria will be honoured by all who mourn him, particularly at this critical point when the nation is in need of selfless citizens to change Nigeria for the better.

“The President extends heartfelt condolences to Gen. Ogundeko’s family, as well as the government and people of Ogun State.

“He prays that God will grant the soul of the departed eternal rest and comfort his family, friends and admirers.”

Nothing Like Single Mother

By Luke Onyekakeyah

I was provoked by the story in the Punch newspaper of Friday, August 5, involving our amiable Nollywood star actress, Kate Henshaw, concerning a lady sex worker, identified as Mary, who allegedly abandoned her child Michael, at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba.

Our sister Kate has been unduly traumatised for doing good to a helpless woman and her child. But there is nothing to regret about, for it is written, blessed are those who suffer for righteousness sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Sister Kate should rejoice and be glad that her name is written in heaven.

I decided to take a critical look at the principal actor, in this case, Mary, who in our society, may be referred to as a “single mother.” I am nauseated, indeed, upset, by the nomenclature “single mother”, which is wrongly applied to women such as Mary, whereas, in the real sense of the word, Mary is not single; she, indeed, has partnered with four different men for whom she had four children. How then could she be said to be single?

According to the story, Kate Henshaw’s attention was drawn to the condition of the mother and her child through the social media, while they begged around the Onikan area of Lagos State. Mary’s youngest child, Michael, who she had for a Malian man, was said to have been born with a cancerous growth in the face. Cashing in on the boy’s condition, Mary was taking him to beg on the streets of Lagos.

Henshaw said she was tagged on Twitter sometime in March, 2016, and she was touched by the plight of the boy and took interest to help him. She said she asked people to find both mother and child, and after a while, they were found at Osborne, Ikoyi, a suburb of Lagos.

From there, she said someone assisted her in getting a bed space for the sick child at LUTH and both the mother and child were admitted. She reported the matter to Project Alert on Violence Against Women, a non-governmental organisation involving the Lagos State Government. But Mary was said to have initially refused to cooperate with the hospital until she was threatened with arrest.

Henshaw said the attitude of Michael’s 30-year old mother prompted a DNA test, which confirmed that she was the biological mother of the child. Mary was said to be aggressive to the nurses and other mothers in the hospital ward, to the extent that on April 24, she fought with a hospital maid and was sent out of the ward. She was re-accepted after the hospital was begged and she promised to be of good behaviour.

Furthermore, Henshaw said they visited Mary’s relatives in Irawo, Ikorodu, where they discovered that she had three other children for different men, who she left to the care of her aged mother. Then, on June 9, 2016, Mary finally abandoned her baby at the hospital absconded.

What prompted this comment is the term “single mother”, though not directly used in the story. Is it proper to call Mary a “single mother”, when in actual fact, she has a chain of partners all over the place and could even have the fifth child, and more, since she is still young? The story identified Mary as “a sex worker”, which to me, is a more appropriate classification for her kind. Does the nomenclature “single mother” make any sense?

Let’s begin by defining the terms “single” and “mother” for better understanding and appreciation. The Encarta Dictionary defines “single” to mean, one; considered individually; without spouse or partner, etc. The third meaning clearly explains the fact that a man or woman can only be appropriately called single if he/she has no spouse or partner. In marital classification, a woman can only claim to be single if, truly, she has no spouse or partner, meaning, that she is available for marriage. In biblical times, such a single girl would be a virgin, pure and undefiled. Viewed from this angle, no woman is single if she has had a child. Referring to a woman who has chain of failed spouses and or partners all over the place as “single mother” is a misnomer. It is totally incorrect to do that anywhere in the world.

This position would further be strengthened with the definition of mother. The same Encarta Dictionary defines “mother” as female parent – a woman who has a child; also, a woman acting as parent of a child to whom she has not given birth to. Whereas, the first woman who has born a child cannot be rightly called a single mother, even, if she is living without a spouse or partner; only a woman acting as parent to a child whom she has not given birth to could be rightfully called a single mother, if she has never had a spouse or partner.

Based on the foregoing, there is nothing like single mother among the host of women/ladies who never married officially but have children from men of their choice. The fact that a woman has given birth to children means she has had a spouse or partner. And, quite often, those partners are very much around the corner still “servicing” the so-called “single mothers.”

I would like to clarify that a divorced or separated lady is not in this category. Such ladies are recognised by society as divorced or separated. But as for the free women who prefer not to get married but would like to have children from any man of their choice, they are better referred to as ‘unclassified mother. ’ This is a better nomenclature under marital status than free woman, which might be offensive.

As civilisation goes haywire under the post modernisation information age, age-long cherished family values are discarded. Today, there are no less than eight gender classifications over and above the traditional male and female genders. We now have lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (transsexual) (LGBT) subcultures. A man who has changed his sex to a woman might have a child and would like to be addressed as “single mother”!

As lots of women and even men would prefer to have children without getting married in the traditional way, it is important to understand that none of these people can rightly be called “single mother” or “single father”, so long as they have had a spouse or partner.

No Plan To Increase Fuel Prices, NNPC Boss Says

Dr Maikanti Baru, the Group Managing Director of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), has dismissed reports that the corporation will soon announce an increase in the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).

Recall that it was reported earlier today that because of the high cost of forex, NNPC had concluded plans to increase the pump price of PMS from N145 per litre to between N170 and N200.

The NNPC boss however debunked the report saying, “I have not been directed to increase pump price, even the other price was based on recommendation from the regulatory body.

“I’m not aware that they are planning to do any increase, you know there are several factors that necessitated that ,especially the issue of exchange rate that has moved and we don’t expect any serious changes.

“So far the request for forex for importation of gasoline, popularly called petrol, has been met and our own supply situation is robust, we are meeting demands.’’

The managing director, however, revealed that Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA) could review the prices of petroleum products when necessary.

He said that NNPC currently had in stock over 1.4 billion litres of PMS for sale to the public at government controlled price of N145 per litre.

“We have over 1.4 billion litres on ground.

“So, I don’t see any basis for increase; however, the review could be done by the right body, you should contact PPPRA, that is the regulatory body as far as petrol pricing is concerned,’’ he said.

Femi Fani-Kayode: Niger Delta Crusaders, Muslim Pilgrims And United States of Nigeria [Part 1]

By Femi Fani-Kayode

“If Boko Haram kills Christians and burns down churches, we will slay Muslims and raze down mosques. We want to warn them that we, the Niger Delta youths, in this 21st century will not accept the killing of innocent Christians or the burning of churches. That if they try it in the north or any part of Nigeria, we the Niger Delta youths will not see any Muslim or mosque in the Niger Delta”- NIGER DELTA REVOLUTIONARY CRUSADERS, VANGUARD NEWSPAPER, 5th AUGUST, 2016.

It is no longer news that the new leader of Boko Haram, Mr. Abu Musa Al Barnawi, who apparently has the backing of ISIS, has said that he will target only Christians and burn down all the Churches in the country. He has also said that Muslims and mosques will no longer be targeted and that Mr. Abubakar Shekau, the erstwhile leader and principal voice of the terror group, is no longer the leader.

Mr. Shekau has responded by saying that he will continue to slaughter whoever he pleases and that he remains the authentic leader. There appears to be a very serious rift in the ranks of Boko Haram which is good news. As far as I am concerned the two factions can do us all a favour by destroying one another and burning in hell.

Anyone that targets Christians and Churches, or indeed any innocent civilians for slaughter, is not worthy of life. They are nothing but vermin and, like the cockroaches that they are, they must be crushed.

Mr. Shekau is evil but Mr. Al Barnawi is even worse: he is the devil incarnate. He represents ISIS and we all know what that means. Whichever way we look at it and whatever is going on within the ranks of Boko Haram we must not loose sight of the bigger picture. And that bigger picture points to one thing: Nigeria is in a mess.

Quite apart from the poverty and hardship that has afflicted the land coupled with the total destruction of the economy and quite apart from the shattering of peoples dreams and the drastic reduction in their standard of living by the ineffectual and barren fiscal and economic policies of an inept and incompetent government, our President did not stop there.

He also went as far as to appoint as his Minister of Sports a man who is clearly (to use Donald Trump’s words about Hilary Clinton) “unbalanced and unhinged”. This is a man that can barely speak English and who, during the week of the Olympics, publicly referred to our country as “the United States Of Nigeria” whilst reprimanding our Olympic football team for getting stuck in America and arriving late in Brazil.

Someone should tell Honorable Minister Solomon Dalung that it was HIS job to get our boys to Rio De Janeiro on time and that it was something of a scandal and a national embarrassment that it took the last minute intervention and assistance of Delta Air, a private American airline, to get them there in time for their match with Japan.

Whilst our boys did us proud by going on to defeat Japan and later Sweden, the video of the Minister disparaging them and spouting nonsense about some fictitious and imaginary country called ‘the United States of Nigeria’ whilst wearing his ridiculous red beret went viral on the internet. A fool goes by no other name.

In normal climes the Minister would have been forced to resign the following day and he would have been compelled to apologise to the nation that he is purportedly serving for forgetting its name. Sadly though there is nothing that is “normal” about Nigeria or the Buhari administration.

Equally abysmal was the recent outing of Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola, President Buhari’s “super Minister” of Power, Works and Housing, on BBC TV’s Hardtalk. Before millions of viewers from all over the world, the Minister told his host Mr. Stephen Sackhur a shameless and pernicious lie by claiming that he never promised Nigerians an increase in power generation and supply.

It is his inability to be forthright, to appreciate the virtues of telling the truth and to keep his election promises that has earned my aburo Tunde Fashola the nickname of Minister of Darkness.

Since he was appointed ‘super Minister’ the power generation in our country has dropped from 5000 megawatts at the time when President Jonathan left office just over a year ago to under 2000 megawatts today. Worst still he has not managed to construct or complete the refurbishment of a single road.

Yet it is not the crippled economy, the erring and dim-witted Minister of Sports, the intellectually dishonest and lying Minister of Power, Works and Housing or any of the other numerous foibles of the Buhari administration that gives us the most concern today.

It is rather the gradual and systematic generation and invocation of a frightful and cataclysmic atmosphere of war and the looming threat and increasing likelihood of a great and violent ethnic and religious conflict, the likes of which Africa has never seen before.

If it is not Boko Haram that is slaughtering our people it is the Fulani herdsmen. Worse still they are doing these despicable things with the active connivance and support of a few people that are in the corridors of power today whose objective is to islamise our nation, plunge us into a fiery abyss and create chaos.
The bible says ‘there is no fellowship between light and darkness’. We have said it before and we will say it again: we must restructure Nigeria before it is too late. If we fail to do so we will have no choice but to reconsider our so-called unity.

If things don’t change quickly we must consider the possibility of dividing our country and renegotiating our union. We cannnot afford to wait any longer because we are playing with fire and we are sitting on a keg of gunpowder. We must attempt to do whatever needs to be done peacefully and we must not allow the butchers and those that kill in the name of their god to provoke us into another civil war.

Nothing represents the danger of the war that is looming more than the response of the Niger Delta Revolutionary Crusaders (an affiliate of the Niger Delta Avengers) to Al Barnawi’s threat. They responded by saying that if Christians and Churches are targeted by Boko Haram they will kill all the Muslims in the Niger Delta area and they will burn down all the mosques. It is a simple case of “action” and “reaction” and I sincerely hope that those that are used to killing others and not being killed themselves take them seriously.

Clearly we are living in dangerous times and I sincerely hope that those that brought religion into our politics in 2015 and that used Islam and the Boko Haram offensive as a political tool against a southern Christian President are seeing the fruits of their labour.

When you invoke the proverbial genie and let it out of the kettle you must be prepared to live with the consequences and whatever follows. Yet the folly does not stop there. As if our sensibilities were not already sufficiently provoked President Buhari took the religious dance to yet another level last week by directing the Central Bank of Nigeria to sell foreign exchange to Muslim pilgrims that were on their way to Saudi Arabia for hajj at 197 naira to 1 USD.

This whilst everyone else, including students, manufacturers, businessmen, Christian pilgrims, the ailing and holiday-makers, must continue to buy at 400 naira to 1 USD. When the math is done this amounts to a whooping N7.9 billion naira concession for Muslim pilgrims.

And all this in a country that is not only impoverished and whose people are suffering from the worst economic hardship and poverty crunch since independence but also one that is meant to be a secular state. Such is the national outrage that President Buhari’s forex concession to his Muslim brothers and sisters has provoked that a well-known political commentator and activist Mr. Paul Achalla wrote the following on his Facebook wall on August 5th:

“N410 to $1 for business, education, entrepreneurship, food processing, manufacturing, etc. and N197 to $1 for pilgrims going to Saudi Arabia? Bluntly put, Boko Haram ideology won Nigeria’s 2015 general election!!!”

Paul Achalla is right. How can this sort of nonsense be justified in a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural, multi-religious secular state? Is Buhari’s Nigeria crafted only for the Muslim north? Is Saudi Arabia now the spiritual headquarters of our nation? If it is not the Sultan of Sokoto declaring public holidays, it is the President giving subsidised rates of foreign exchange and preferential treatment to members of his own religious faith.

If it is not that he is leading our country into a sinister and dangerous military coalition of Sunni Muslim nations it is that he is holding conferences in Abuja with foreign Muslim clerics whose stated objective is to “spread sharia throughout Nigeria” and islamise our country.

Worst still virtually all his Service Chiefs and principal commanders in his Armed Forces together with his National Security Advisor, his Minister of Defence, his Minister of Internal Affairs, his Inspector General of Police, his Chief of Defence Intelligence, his Director General of State Security, his Chairman of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, his Commander of the National Civil Defence Corps, his Comptroller General of Customs, his Comptroller General of Immigration, his Comptroller General of Prisons and ALL his other security, para-security and intelligence agencies, bar one, are northern Muslims.

Can there be any greater form of corruption, abuse of power, injustice and betrayal of trust than this? Does this not prove the fact that our country is in dire need of restructuring? (TO BE CONTINUED).

I Will Not Grant Any Application Until You Obey My Orders – Court Tells DSS

The Federal High Court, Abuja, has said it will not grant any application brought by the Department of State Services (DSS) until all orders of the court are obeyed.

A vacation judge, Justice Nnamdi Dimgba, made this known in Abuja on Monday when DSS Counsel GOA Agbadua brought an application for a remand warrant.

Dimgba said it would be wrong for the court to grant an application of the DSS when it had no regard for orders of the court.

He said that he had ordered that retired Air Commodore Umar Mohammed, who was arraigned before him, to be remanded in Kuje Prison pending the hearing of his bail application, but that the DSS decided to keep him in its custody against the order of the court.

Dimgba also cited another instance when he ordered the service to produce some accused persons in court but noted that the DSS had yet to comply.

“The court will not grant any application of the DSS until there is sufficient proof that all orders of the court have been obeyed.

“It will be counter-productive for the court to take this application and grant the reliefs sought by the DSS.

“This court hereby adjourns this application sine die until the applicant’s counsel files an affidavit deposing to the fact that all outstanding orders of this court on the DSS have been complied with”, he added.

Dimgba had berated the DSS for flaunting orders of the court, one of which was to remand an accused person in Kuje prison. (NAN)

Budget Padding: Presidency Explains Why It Cannot Act Now

The Presidency through the Presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina, has reacted to the controversy in the House of Representatives over alleged N42billion constituency projects inserted into the budget at committee level after the House had passed the document.

According to him, it was only when the House of Representatives referred it to the executive that the presidency can act.

“It is a National Assembly matter, especially the House of Representatives,” he told Daily Trust.

“When it is sorted out there and referred to the Presidency, that is when the Presidency can do anything about it.

“There is the principle of separation of power,” Adesina added.

BREAKING: Abia Governorship Tussle: Appeal Court Reserves Judgment Over Ikpeazu’s Sack

The Abuja division of the Court of Appeal on Tuesday reserved judgment in an appeal by embattled Governor of Abia State, Okezie Ikpeazu, where he is challenging the ruling of the Federal High Court, Abuja, which sacked him as governor of the state.

Recall that an Abuja Federal High Court had on June 27 sacked Ikpeazu as governor over tax evasion.

The Justice Okon Abang-led court had also ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to issue Ikpeazu’s challenger in the 2015 Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, governorship primaries, Uche Ogah with certificate of return which was done, however, Ogah has not been sworn in.

Following Abang’s judgement, the embattled governor had filed an appeal at the appellate court presided over by Justice Morenikeji Ogunwumiju, seeking to overturn the judgement.

Get Ready For Another Increase In Fuel Pump Price – Marketers

As the United States dollar hit an all-time high last week, exchanging for N400 at the parallel market, Nigerians have been asked to brace up for another hike in pump prices of petrol, due to the lingering scarcity of foreign exchange to finance the importation of the product.

Punch quoted oil marketers as saying that despite the competition in the business, they were battling hard to retain the price of the Premium Motor Spirit within the approved N133.28 per litre range.

“The truth is that Nigerians just have to brace for higher PMS price; there are no two ways about it. The government cannot fund this market; the money is not just there. Even if the government wishes to assist, it does not have the wherewithal to do. So, Nigerians should brace for higher rates,” an official of one of the notable oil marketing companies, who spoke to our correspondent on condition of anonymity, said.

He added, “We are all aware that the price of crude has been falling in the international market and it is the dollar the government gets from crude sale that it uses to solve forex problems. So, there’s no fast rule or solution to it than for all of us, both users and marketers, to just prepare for a price hike.

“For marketers, they should know that the days of higher profits are gone. Before now, if you want to import petrol, you’ll have to wait for months and possibly bribe some people to get an import licence. But those days are gone; nowadays, every interested dealer can get the licence and this has created room for competition, which is why you still get the product at around N140 to N145 per litre. We only hope that this will continue as the dollar availability improves.”

Another member of the Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria was quoted as saying that, “It is very logical for the PMS price to rise any moment from now, for there is no way somebody can import at the rate of N400 to a dollar and you expect him to continue selling at the official ex-depot price. And mind you, the government promised to facilitate forex provision to marketers at N287 to a dollar, because you cannot buy at N400 and expect to continue selling at the prevalent rates you see at filling stations today.

“However, most depots are still managing the situation and are selling at the recommended price of N133.28 per litre to filling stations. It is when it goes above this price that you will notice the eventual increase in the pump prices of the PMS. So, if the trend of forex unavailability continues, then the situation may go out of the control of the marketers.”

Kolawole Anthony: Religious Malpractices And Implication For National Security

I always struggle to keep a smirk off my face each time I ruminate over how we often as a people focus on basic things while glossing over the crucial ones. Security, climate change, economy and a host of other hot issues are important but they become basic when viewed from the perspective of crucial issues like religion and healthcare.

Possibly owing to our sensitivities, we tend to take religion for granted. In a world where we now go out of our ways not to cause offence, religion and those that take it to fanatical levels become the biggest beneficiaries. For instance, I had waited several times to see public outrage against religion driven violence, even when life is lost but we all tend to simply heave our shoulders in a gesture that says ‘it is about religion, I don’t want to blaspheme’ as we move on to discuss the next political scandal.

Take the anticorruption crusade for example, it has indicted ex and serving public office holders, politicians, soldiers, media owners and bankers. Nothing has been said of the clergy to whom the treasury thieves made monetary donations or even built places of worship. It is another way of saying you are above the law once you come by way of religion. I see this license extends even to the freedom to preach hatred, promote extremism and radicalize youths.

In one part of the country I have seen clerics keep youths busy studying scriptures, that means they will never get a western education; in another part of the country, youths that did get the western education are encouraged to wait for the divine such that they never get to contribute to the economy because they will enter retirement without once picking up paid employment and will remain dependent on society.

This is why I wonder why we must continue to prevaricate in tackling head on a disaster that has already befallen us. This unscriptural reverence for the clergy and the tainted preaching they give to the public gave us Boko Haram that bastardized the Sunni Wahabbi brand of Islam to kill even Muslim; it gave us the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) that convoluted the ideologies of the Shiite sect to send youths on suicide missions; it gave us the child killing outrage of exorcists somewhere in the south; and it is to it we must give credit for the kidnappers and robbers that usually claim they acted on the prompting from their prosperity believing pastors.

The state has taken on Boko Haram once it became clear that religion was just a cover under which some psychos were operating to satisfy their perversion. Society, including the police, is speaking and against those that brand children witches. Kidnappers and robbers meet their waterloo daily whether from security agencies on enraged mobs that is ever willing to dispense jungle justice with petrol soaked tyres for garlands. But we seem to be making excuses for entities like the IMN and other groups that are presently at the stage of indoctrinating and brainwashing followers.

This indoctrination with the attendant militarisation got to a head when members of this sect made an attempt on the life of a serving military chief. It was the climax of a reign of terror that did not get widespread media coverage for some reason or the other. Had the military not subsequently conducted that operation IMN would have by now surpassed Boko Haram in undermining the existence of the Nigerian state. This is because the doctrine its leadership preaches to followers is that of fanatical extremism with hardcore militarisation thrown in to make suicidal fanatics out of youths.

The sect’s reaction in the aftermath of the military operation remains a warning on the threat they pose to Nigeria’s security as a nation and as a secular state. In addition to the treasonable acts they had committed they also reduced Nigeria to a proxy state with the then Iranian Ambassador, Saheed Kozechi threatening destruction for the country. But for the intervention of nationalistic Nigerians that called the criminal alliance between the Ambassador and IMN to order they would have achieved the agenda of destabilising the country especially given the way they misled sections of the population into thinking that government’s efforts at preventing extremism was rights abuse.

Just months after the December IMN/military clash, as would be expected of hard-line fundamentalists, the sect’s members are at it again by threatening a breach of the peace with a trek that would be classified as criminal in most countries of the world. They are trekking from their heartland in Zaria to Abuja in a development that would potentially pitch them against security operatives. They know this and they have prepared the ground to again play the victim by claiming security agencies plan to attack them.

There is therefore need to deal with this dubious doctrine that IMN is propagating. We can find the answer on how to proceed outside our shores. Europe offers possible answers. On that continent I see countries that think tolerating extremism could make it less virulent. Petting a viper does not make its venom less potent same as being tolerant of extreme religious views would not make those radicalized by it less violent. France, Belgium, Germany and Britain can testify to this. Under the guise of freedom – of expression, movement, association and religion, they allowed youths in their country to be radicalized and today they are dealing with the consequences of that choice. France in particular will for a long time pay a huge price for its libertarian stance.

I fear this is where we are headed if we continue to give room for more extremism after Boko Haram by providing cover for IMN using human rights. We might as well say it is okay for people to accept burning children as witches as a right steeped in beliefs or for people to rob and kidnap others at will because their cleric promised them breakthrough.

As we have experienced with Boko Haram and as some countries in the Middle East and Europe have now learnt, inflammatory preaching and radicalization is a threat to any country’s security. Unlike countries that allowed the cancer of extremism to spread before waking up Nigeria, especially the 19 northern states, must act to clamp down on hate preaching, growth and spread of the Islamic State agenda through fake preaching and the attendant detrimental consequences on national security.

I think we must look to countries where extremism has not flourished to find the answers. Such countries tend to immediately curtail any tendency towards the propagation of extreme doctrines. Usually, there would be those that will protest about how rights are being trampled but then there is national security to consider. It is this implication for national security that should drive us as a people and not a poorly thought out reflex to keep religious malpractices in place at our own peril.

Quit Politics If You Are Selfish – Jonathan Tells politicians

Immediate past President, Goodluck Jonathan at a press Conference in Lusaka, Zambia, has admonished selfish leaders against seeking political positions.

The former President urged politicians contesting various positions in the country’s August 11 general elections to accept results of the poll and avoid violence.

Jonathan is in Zambia as the Head of the African Union Election Observers.

His comment was contained in a statement by his media aide, Mr. Ikechukwu Eze.

According to Jonathan, “Politicians going in for elective positions should be open-minded about the outcome because they can either win or lose. Politicians who want to play meaningful roles in governance should realise that it is not about them. Those who care only about themselves should quit politics and begin to manage personal businesses.

“Our states are not private enterprises. You cannot be interested in governance without sufficient interest in the affairs of the people. So the interest of the country should come first as politicians tick their priority boxes.

“This also requires politicians to accept the outcome of genuine elections because of the interest of the people. You cannot instigate violence and mayhem on the one hand and pretend that you are fighting for the people on the other. It does not make any sense to get involved in bloodshed, destroy properties, frustrate businesses and collapse the economy in order to win elections. Our advice is to put public interest above other expectations by accepting the results of elections.”

Nobody Blocked Jibrin From Seeing Buhari, He Didn’t Follow Protocol – Presidency

The Presidency has dismissed insinuation by Abdulmumin Jibrin, the former Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Appropriation, saying he was “blocked” from seeing President Muhammadu Buhari over his budget padding allegations against some principal officers of the lower legislative chambers.

Recall that Jibrin had in a statement on Sunday alleged that two governors and three former members of the House were “blocking” him from meeting the President to state his own side of the story.

Abdulrahman Kawu-Sumaila, Senior Special Assistant to the President and former Deputy Minority leader of the House of Representatives is said to be one of those Jibrin had alleged to have impeded his effort to see the President.

But reacting to the report, the SSA said as a lawmaker, Jibrin should know the “protocol” on how to see the President.

According to Kawu-Sumaila, the former Appropriation Chairman had never approached him to facilitate a meeting with the President.

He said, “The way he has been going about this issue is unfortunate. He is dragging the names of innocent people into it.

“He has not approached me that he wants to see the President. If he makes a request, I will facilitate it for him. He knows the protocol.”

On his role in facilitating Buhari’s meeting with Dogara, Kawu-Sumaila said, “When the Speaker wanted to see Mr. President, he told me.

“I did my part to facilitate it. I was waiting at the office while they met. I was not at the meeting with them.

“It was after the meeting ended and the Speaker came out that I saw him off.

“The same thing would have happened if Jibrin requested to see the President.”

Buhari Re-Launches War Against Indiscipline Brigade In Abuja [PHOTOS]

The President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government took the fight against corruption to another level with the re-introduction of the War Against Indiscipline, WAI.

Unveiling the brigade, the Director General of National Orientation Agency, NOA, Dr Garba Abari explained that the body will aide civil intelligence gathering in the area of insecurity, violence, kidnapping, and other forms of social vices.

Recall that Buhari as Military Head of State from 1984 to 1985, introduced WAI as a panacea for corruption and to force Nigerians into exhibiting correct ethical conduct.

The programme then had gained so much popularity, as Nigerians disciplined themselves to do the right thing. The culture even continued for a while after he was ousted.

WAI was, however, criticised for human rights abuses regarding freedom, justice and equality, as the military brought its powers to bear in enforcing discipline on Nigerians.

Obasanjo’s Claim That We’re Gasping For Breath Only Exists In His Imagination – PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Board of Trustees, BoT, Chairman, Senator Walid Jibrin,, has responded to the recent assertion by former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, that the party is gasping for breath, insisting that such claim existed only in the imagination of those making it.

The former president who debunked a photo news which went viral on the social media recently, had said that he left the party when it was alive and bubbling, therefore, could not have rejoined “a now divided, factionalised party gasping for breath.”

But the party's BoT chairman made a veiled reference to Obasanjo's statement while inaugurating an 18-member peace committee headed by Prof. Jerry Gana.

According to him, “Leaders who are talking in newspapers that this party is not alive, the party is alive. It is only in the imagination of those saying that this party is dead and that it will not come back.

In apparent reference to the former president, he said, “Such people should change their minds. If he comes back to this party, we are ready to receive him,” Jibrin said.

Corruption Now Official In Nigeria – Pastor Tunde Bakare

Pastor Tunde Bakare, founder of the Latter Rain Assembly, at the launch of Onyekachi Ubani Foundation in Lagos, affirmed that government officials in Nigeria have succeeded in making corrupt practices official in the country.

Bakare, who made this statement noted that: “At the twilight of the military era in Nigeria’s political trajectory, the name “Nigeria” became synonymous with a certain word, a word that elicits the image of a cesspool running over corruption.

“At that time, precisely in 1999, Transparency International rated Nigeria the second most corrupt country in the world in terms of perception, second only to her eastern neighbour, Cameroon.

“For instance, given the unbridled looting of the treasury at the time, reportedly to the tune of over 1billion dollars as was subsequently uncovered following the exit of the military, it was obvious that the abnormal had become the norm, the illegal had become legal, the outrageous had become banal and the aberrant had become the gold standard.

“Despite the emergence of a new government on the heels of a strong anti-corruption campaign, despite the credence lent to this anti-corruption promise by the antecedents of President Muhammadu Buhari, and despite global acknowledgment that Nigeria has taken shovel loads off the peak of this mountain of filth,” he added.

Support Our Diversification Efforts, Okowa Task Guild Of Editors

Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, the executive Governor of Delta State, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Charles Aniagwu, has urged the Nigerian Guild of Editors to continue to support efforts geared towards the diversification of the Nigerian economy.

Okowa who Congratulated Mrs. Funke Egbemode, the Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief of New Telegraph, on her confirmation as the substantive President of the Guild, described her emergence as a good omen for the journalism profession.

The governor said that Mrs Egbemode has a wealth of experience and has contributed to the enthronement of democracy through her numerous writings.

Okowa said: “As Nigeria continues to grapple with the challenges of falling oil prices and insecurity in the Niger Delta, oil revenue has continued on the decline in the past two years.

“Government at all levels have been seeking ways of creating other revenue sources. It is, therefore, a challenge to the Nigerian Guild of Editors to ensure that editors continue to suggest more ways of diversifying the economy through their editorial comments and feature writings.’’

Enjoining the new NGE President to bring her wealth of experience to bear on the Guild by taking the training and retraining of journalists very seriously, he said, “This is the only way professionalism can be restored to the journalism profession by ensuring best practices.”

He assured the Editors of his administration's continued support for the promotion of free press for the growth of democracy in Nigeria.
