The Niger Delta Crusaders, The Muslim Pilgrims And The United States Of Nigeria (Part 2)

By Femi Fani-Kayode

Sadly many in the conservative core north remain unconvinced. For example the Arewa Consultative Forum issued a statement on the August 7, in which they stated their total opposition to restructuring and instead of offering an olive branch of peace and understanding to its advocates who are predominantly in the south they issued the usual warnings of dire consequences if the matter is pushed too far.

Worst still a few days ago the Emir of Katsina publicly admonished all northerners to support the government of President Buhari insisting that they had a duty to do so. His words.
“President Muhammadu Buhari is trying his best to rectify the situation and we must support and encourage him. During this trying period, we as northerners are expected to support President Buhari and his team instead of joining others to criticize them.” (The Sun Newspaper, August 7, 2016).

There are no prizes for guessing who the “others” that he is referring to are because it is self-evident.

What the Emir appears to have forgotten is that had it not been for a sizeable number of votes from the south west the President would not have had a hope in hell of being elected.

Simply put what he is saying is that Buhari is effecting a clear and simple northern agenda which must be supported by all true sons and daughters of the north.

He is also suggesting that the feelings and sensibilities of those that oppose him from the south do not matter.

Meanwhile the tension that is being generated by the sectional nature of President Buhari’s policies and government continues to escalate and a face-off is imminent.

Nothing reflects this fact better than the words and obvious concerns of the Ohanaeze Youth Wing who condemned the fact that whilst the Buhari administration continues to keep Mr. Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of IPOB in prison, they are releasing hundreds of murderous Boko Haram terrorists from detention. Their words:
“Buhari’s Federal Government continues to jail Nnamdi Kanu and other Biafrans while Boko Haram terrorists are being released from prisons. It beats the imagination that terrorists who have been responsible for the death of innocent Nigerians are being released while unarmed freedom fighters are kept behind bars against court orders” (Vanguard Newspaper, August 8, 2016).

They also went as far as to suggest that Mr. Kanu’s continued detention may “trigger a crisis in the south-east” .

Not to be left out, the Northern youths, under the auspices of the Northern Youths Leaders Assembly issued a statement on the 8th of August threatening to deal with anyone or any group of people who continue to criticise or try to “tarnish the image” of President Buhari.

Their words: “We will no longer tolerate any insults to the family and members of the President’s cabinet and we will mobilize all our resources to take on anyone who thinks they can use their image as a chess pawn in the game playing out in the media. We hereby warn that the north will no longer tolerate any further attack on the image, family and character of President Muhammadu Buhari in his quest to make Nigeria a better place for all” (Vanguard Newspaper, August 8, 2016).

Yet the most chilling warning of all came from yet another militant group in the Niger Delta Area known as the Adaka Boro Avengers. They went a step further than their brothers in arms, the Niger Delta Crusaders, by saying
“On the threat by Boko Haram to kill Christians we are also sending this message to those Northerners who want to burn and kill Christians in North in the name of the Islamic religion to commence immediately but they must know that one Niger Delta soul will be exchanged for 100 Northern souls” (Vanguard Newspaper, August 8, 2016)..

These are dangerous words from dangerous people. We ignore them at our own peril. It is clear to the discerning that now, possibly more than at any other time in the beleaguered history of our country, we need prayers to ensure a peaceful resolution to what is essentially an extremely complicated problem that presents us with an existential threat.

Only a fool would disregard the fact that the ethnic and religious polarisation that we are faced with today is real and that the drums of war are beating in our country.

When one considers all of the above is it any wonder that yours truly wrote the following words in my column a couple of weeks ago. I said:
“The prayer is no longer ‘God bless Nigeria’ but rather ‘God break Nigeria’.

It is no longer ‘God defend Nigeria’ but rather ‘God restructure Nigeria’.

It is no longer ‘God deliver Nigeria’ but rather ‘God deliver US FROM Nigeria’.

It is no longer ‘God preserve Nigeria’ but rather ‘God redefine Nigeria’.

It is no longer ‘God remember Nigeria’ but rather ‘God dismember Nigeria’ “- (‘NIGERIA’S THIRD MAHDI AND THE LAST OF THE AMALEKITE KINGS’, THE SUN NEWSPAPER, NEW TELEGRAPH NEWSPAPER, July 25, 2016).

Clearly things are falling apart. Yet if the Buhari administration continues to ignore our concerns and admonitions and if they continue to insist on arresting and locking us up and attempting to intimidate us simply for our timely counsel and interventions perhaps they will listen to one of their own.

If they do not wish to hear the truth about the way forward from us perhaps they would be ready to hear it from someone who openly supported them and helped them to come to power last year.

That person is none other than the distinguished and highly respected General Alani Akinrinade, a war-hero, an elder-statesman, a revered and respected Yoruba elder and a leading supporter of President Buhari and the APC during the 2015 presidential elections. In July he said the following to the Sun Newspaper:

“First, the APC must be told, in no uncertain terms that it is fraudulent. They led us down the garden path, lying to us about what is in the end of the tunnel.

What was in the end of the tunnel was restructuring and each one of them, the party chairman, the president, his vice, and in that order, are all talking from the other side of their mouths now. In other words, they lied to us in 2015 before the election.

My message to them is, they should embark on a very major exercise now to restructure the country, otherwise, how do they propose to settle the crisis in the South-South because it is becoming embarrassing.

A man whose land you went to tap resources and then he couldn’t farm or fish, because you bastardised his farmland and you then send back to him stipends from what you took away from his land, such a man can never be happy”.

“Is the APC thinking that the matter of religion, ethnicity and other crises across the country are just going to go away? Even the late Sardauna of Sokoto said so, that we are a disparate people and we must recognise that fact and use it to our advantage.

Nobody is going to build Nigeria the way APC is going about it. I’m not too sure how many people sing our National Anthem again because they don’t even believe in it.

There is nothing like unity in this country. Unity can only exist when we all understand one another and there are some mutual relationships.

If I know you are always cheating me by giving 44 local councils to Kano and giving Lagos 20, which is not in the same parameter with Kano in terms of population, production and name it, how can I be happy”?

“However rickety Nigeria has become, if there is a wholesome reconstruction and re-engineering of the system, it can work.

That was the major reason the Southwest went along with the APC and Buhari, as the presidential candidate in 2015….to tell us that he didn’t read the recommendations (of the 2014 National Conference) and that it is best for the archives and that, in fact, restructuring is unnecessary and according to his Vice, what we needed is diversification and whatsoever, I remain baffled.

They were just saying we would diversify into agriculture and solid minerals, as if the items will come from heaven.. If the APC fails to do something in that direction, I’m not talking about the 2014 conference report alone, but all others preceding it that have similar recommendations to restructure this country, then President Buhari may forget it and I’m saying he is likely to be the last president of this country. It is as bad as that” – ( ‘A REALITY CHECK FROM GENERAL ALANI AKINRINADE’ THISDAY NEWSPAPER, 5 AUGUST, 2016).

It took courage for Akinrinade to speak up in this way and I commend him for it. His words and counsel are timely and I hope that those that are in power today are humble enough to accept them and retrace their steps.

Of all the heroes in both history and mythology the greatest were King David of Israel, William Wallace of Scotland, King Leonides of Sparta, Hector of Troy, Alexander the Great of Macedonia, King Jehu the son of Nimshi and Achilles of the Mermidans.

They all stood for the truth. They all loved their God. They all had faith and the courage of their convictions. They all refused to bow before the enemy. They all fought till the end.

O that we had just a handful of such gallant men in Nigeria: we would have restructured long ago and made waves in the comity of nations.

O that we had more men who have the courage of their convictions and who are prepared to risk all and speak truth to power.

Permit me to end this contribution with the words of Minister Louis Farrakhan the leader of the Nation of Islam in the United States of America. On August 7, he said:

“Anarchy may await America due to the daily injustices suffered by the people. There really can be no peace without justice. There can be no justice without truth. And there can be no truth unless someone rises up to tell you the truth”.

I concur. And this applies in the Nigerian context and to the Nigerian situation more than any other. There can and will be no peace in this country without justice.

That justice begins with “restructuring” and it ends with
“separation” and the birth of two or more new nations out of one.
Why? Because the Bible says “there is no fellowship between light and darkness” . It says “there can be no love or friendship between the children of God and the servants of Belial” . It says “we must not be unequally yoked” .

President Buhari-Led Government Has Failed Nigeria – Pastor Dikwa

Pastor Kallamu Musa Ali Dikwa, Executive Director, Voice of Northern Christian Movement, in a statement he issued in Kaduna, expressed dismay that President Muhammadu Buhari has failed Nigerians with his change agenda.

He noted that, “During the Buhari and Osibanjo’s APC Presidential Campaign 2015, I sacrificed my life and time based on General Buhari’s promises to Nigerians specifically in fighting corruption, terrorism, uniting Nigerians, employment and job creation for the youth and the boosting of the economy of the country.

“So far, President Buhari has made remarkable achievements in fighting corruption and terrorism among some of the Nigerian elites, but without making a holistic approach to the issues mentioned.

“May I ask about the third promise, that is, uniting Nigerians? What is happening now especially in the areas of appointments and employment? We can clearly see the kind of one-sided appointments with about 80 per cent Muslims.

“For instance, Comptroller General of customer, Comptroller General of Immigration, commandant NSCDC, Comptroller General of Prison Services, Chairman EFCC, Director of DSS, Accountant General of the Federation, Chief of Army Staff, Chief of Air-Staff, Chief of Staff and National Security Adviser.

“Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Minister of Interior, Minister of Defence, Minister of Education, DG NYSC, AMCON Boss, NCC Chief, NPA Chief, DG NTA and IGP, are all Muslims.

“In addition to this, there has been some employment to the Department of Security Service and Economics and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC), which is also one-sided, favouring the Muslims over the Christians in Northern Region.

“Let me also mention the replacements in both the immigration and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps by Muslims against the Northern Christians.”

He noted that at the moment, the entire country was already ravished with hunger and famine, adding, “A situation where masses are buying a measure of rice over N550.00 and a bag of fertilizer about N10,000.00.”

“I want Mr. President to know that we did not sacrificed our lives in bringing him into power to come and oppress and kill our people with hunger. I must tell Mr. President that we cannot continue like this, else, we are going to change the “CHANGE.”

“When I blew up the whistle of N7 billion bribe given to Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), by the Former President, Goodluck Jonathan, one of the security agents nearly killed me just because of APC and Buhari, no APC leader that stood with me during my trauma in the hands of the DSS.

“People accused me that APC governors gave me money and I’m now challenging the APC leaders. If any of them gives me one naira to work for APC, let that person come out and prove it to the whole world. It is on record that APC leaders deceived Nigerian masses to vote the party in order to achieve their own personal interest,” he observed.

Budget Padding: Presidency Explains Why It Cannot Act Now

The Presidency through the Presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina, has reacted to the controversy in the House of Representatives over alleged N42billion constituency projects inserted into the budget at committee level after the House had passed the document.

According to him, it was only when the House of Representatives referred it to the executive that the presidency can act.

“It is a National Assembly matter, especially the House of Representatives,” he told Daily Trust.

“When it is sorted out there and referred to the Presidency, that is when the Presidency can do anything about it.

“There is the principle of separation of power,” Adesina added.

I Can Stabilise PDP If…- Bode George

Chief Bode George, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), after collecting PDP chairmanship nomination form for N1 million at the party’s temporary secretariat, has said he can stabilise the party if voted to become chairman. He made the remark in Abuja. He said, ''if people vote for me, I look forward to stabilise the party and put it in right position.

"The ruling party should get ready for serious engagement because we have started a cohesive battle ahead of 2019'', George said. According to him, PDP is not down and out. It will rise again. With the right leadership, defectors will sheathe their swords and return. He said although the PDP was undergoing turmoil, he would stabilise it as he said was known for his ability to resolve problems, if he becomes the chairman.

''It takes an experienced captain to stabilise a ship hit by tornado and if you know the crisis in PDP, that is the position the party is facing right now.

''I am happy that all is not lost, and the condition has been enhanced, zoning has gone extremely well. I have paid my dues in this party and I shouldn't be afraid of anybody. ''This job requires commitment, determination; it requires justice and fairness. They know me, what we cannot defend we cannot go for.

''Trying to come back is like looking back, we are lucky we got a bloody nose not a technical knockout; we will rise again.

''Everybody will have to come on board even those of our friends who were angry and left for the APC; they are tenants there because they were landlords in PDP.

''If we are lucky and we get the right leadership who is fair and just and committed in the party, they will come back’’, he contended.

The convention is billed to hold on Aug. 17 in Port Harcourt.

2016 Budget: Padding Not A Crime Under Nigerian Law, Says Dogara

Speaker Yakubu Dogara of the House of Representatives has said he would not resign. “Resign for what?” He said during an interface with the State House Correspondents at the presidential villa.

Following the whistle blowing by erstwhile ally and Chairman, House Committee on Appropriation, Mr. Abdulmumin Jubrin, Dogara had since come under intense pressure to resign.

Speaking with Journalists after a meeting of about 30 minutes with President Buhari at the Villa on Friday, Dogara said as a lawyer and old hand in the legislative affairs, padding was not an offence under the law. Asked if he was perturbed by the peddling of his name in the allegation, Dogara said he was not in any way worried, saying that the onus of proof rested with Jubrin.

Below was the detail of the chat with Journalists

Journalists: What informed your visit on a Friday?

Dogara: I can’t come and see my President? Do I need any reason to come and see my President. It’s a private visit

Journalists: Was the issue of alleged budget padding discussed?

Dogara: What is budget padding?

Journalists:The language emanated from your chamber?

Dogara: I don’t know, educate me. I am lawyer and the speaker and I have never heard of the word “padding”. What does padding mean?

Journalists: Your former chairman of appropriations is saying you padded the budget?

Dogara: Ask him. He who alleges must prove. That’s the law in Nigeria

Journalists: Are you not going to defend yourself?

Dogara: Am I before a court?

Journalists: There are people saying you should reconvene the House before September resumption time and step aside for thorough investigations?

Dogara: We have rules and regulations. This is not a mock institution. We operate by rules and we will follow the rules

Journalists: Will you resign?

Dogara: Resign for what, for what?

Journalists: On the allegations?

Dogara: What is the allegation?

Journalists: That you and some members of the house padded the budget?

Dogara: What is padding? You haven’t told me. Ask Jibrin what is padding? For me, I studied law and I have been in the legislature and all this period I have never heard of the word “padding” being an offence under any law. If I don’t know, you are the media, research the law and let me know

Journalists: Are you worried?

Dogara: Worried for what? Worried over nothing. Why should I be worried. As far as I am concerned, I am not worried over anything

Journalists: Will there be sanctions for Jibrin?

Dogara: I am not the chairman of Ethics committee of the House, so I wouldn’t know and I don’t know what padding means.

Blame Me, Not Babangida, For June 12 Annulment – Ex-Chief Judge

Justice Dahiru Saleh (retd.), a former chief judge of the Federal High Court, Abuja, while taking responsibility for the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election, has absolved former President Ibrahim Babangida of culpability over the issue.

Saleh also faulted the failure of Chief Moshood Abiola, the acclaimed winner of the election, to appeal his decision.

Recall that Justice Saleh had in June 1993 ordered the then National Electoral Commission, NEC, to stop further release of the results of the election upon the claim that the election itself should not have been conducted in the first place.

He had cited the mid-night ruling on June 11, 1993, by Justice Bassey Ikpeme that the election should not hold.

The Prof. Humphrey Nwosu-led NEC had upon the provisions of Decree 13 of 1993 which ousted the courts from derailing the transition programme, gone ahead to conduct the election on June 12 which turned out to be one of the best organised elections in the history of the country.

Speaking to The Interview, a magazine publication, the former jurist fully absolved Babangida of any role in the issue, even as he expressed no regrets over the ruling which led to a five-year impasse in the march towards democracy.

Asked if he was pressured by Babangida who was at that time the military president of the country, he said: “The former President did nothing of the sort. There were so many cases, and I cannot remember all the cases off-hand.

"There was the case against MKO Abiola, and it was before one of my judges; she was Igbo, but I can’t remember her name. She started the case, then fell sick and was flown out of the country for treatment.

“Then there was another case against him (MKO Abiola), and I had to transfer the case from the other judge’s court to my court. During that time, it turned out that Abiola didn’t even finish the case before he disappeared. Later, I learned he had been arrested by authorities.”

He said: “The judicial system was still open, but he chose not to follow it. Why no one followed up the annulment of the election in the higher courts is best known to members of Abiola’s party at that time.

“If he, as an individual, was not interested, there must have been other people who would be interested to see the end of the story, but they didn’t appeal.

“They were very close, and there were so many assumptions regarding the relationship between the two of them.

“But the point is, in those days, the Yorubas wanted Abiola to become president; he was seen as a kind and considerate man to every Tom, Dick, and Harry.

“Unfortunately, he wanted to be the president, but he couldn’t be. While the political blame must be on President Babangida, he (Babangida) did nothing of the sort to stop him, using my court.

"I think I was in service when I first came to know him. I can’t remember the time. But I only came to know him well after his retirement.

"I was already Chief Judge when he was President. He came and met me there, and he left me there. But while he was in office, we had no personal relationship. He was my boss; I was his subject.

“Anybody not satisfied with what I was doing as Chief Judge could appeal to the Court of Appeal and then to the Supreme Court, simple. And I have no regrets, none whatsoever. No regrets. I would repeat the same thing now.”

Southern Nigeria PDP Zones National Chairmanship To South West

The position of the National Chairmanship of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, was on Thursday night formally zoned to the South-West geopolitical zone by PDP Southern Leaders.

In a meeting attended by Governors, National Assembly Members and Former Ministers, the Southern Nigeria PDP also zoned the positions of National Treasurer and Deputy National Publicity Secretary to the South West.

The party zoned the position of First Deputy National Chairman to the South-South. The South-South also got the positions of National Legal Adviser, Deputy National Women Leader and Deputy National Auditor.

The South-East got the following positions: National Organising Secretary, National Youth Leader and Deputy National Financial Secretary.

Addressing journalists at the end of the meeting, Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu said despite the zoning of the positions, any party member willing to contest any position was free.

He, however, advised party members from the Southern Nigeria to respect the zoning formula.

I Will Intervene In PDP Crisis- Jonathan

Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, Nigeria's immediate past President, has promised to intervene in resolving the leadership crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Jonathan made the promise on Wednesday in Abuja when the zonal representatives of the PDP Board of Trustees led by its Chairman, Sen.Walid Jubril, paid him a courtesy visit.

He said that although he had been holding consultations with individuals, he would do more to resolve the crisis. He noted that Nigerians expected a vibrant opposition to the ruling party and that PDP must rise to the occasion. "Unfortunately we have challenges, but I think you should not be discouraged. Challenges are part of life, it comes up in homes, religious places what is important is our ability to resolve them.

"This should not be beyond us, but I believe that collectively, we can resolve it. ``Any sincere PDP member should know that PDP is superior to any individual, and that members have sacrificed their interests for the party. Even the nation expects a more vibrant opposition. ``I have been talking to individuals but not in a way that is exposed to media but I believe I should do more,’’ Jonathan said.

The former president, however, regretted the conflicting court orders on the party’s crisis, saying it was "unfortunate that the Nigerian environment is that way to have conflicting court judgements.’’ Jonathan commended members of the board for their commitment to the party and condoled with them on the recent death of their secretary, Chief Ojo Maduekwe.

Speaking earlier, Jubril said that the board decided to pay Jonathan courtesy call in recognition of his former position as former president and to brief him on the present state of the party. "It is sad to note that the party has not less than 15 court cases with verdicts given on some and appeal pending.

"We have realised after our meeting, that there was also need for reconciliation and there were committees set for reconciliations and the reconciliations are ongoing. "We have decided to organise a special reconciliation committee while the process for the convention is going on we want to the reconciliation to go on.

"We want you to come into the reconciliation, we are sure that when you do that, we are going to have a way forward in this matter. ``We have great respect for you in spite of the fact that you have not been appearing in our activities,’’ Jubril said. He said that the board had also embarked on several programmes and visitation to founding fathers of the party to address the crisis.

Rotational Presidency’ll Quell Agitations In S-East —NGIGE

Chief Chris Ngige, the Minister of Labour and Employment and former Governor of Anambra State, flayed the Gen. Abudulsalami Abubakar regime that jettisoned the National Constitutional Conference crafted under late Gen. Sani Abacha which provided for rotational presidency, arguing that it would have quelled the strident agitation for Biafra Republic by different separatist groups in the south-east geopolitical zone.

The former governor revealed that rather than adopt the NCC which Gen. Abubakar met as Abacha’a successor, he back-tracked and amended portions of the 1979 Constitution which is responsible for the country’s problems.

This followed a question from Chief John Nnia Nwodo, a former Minister of Information, who complained that the country was not only moving too slow but needed to be restructured in line with the recommendations of the 2014 National Constitutional Conference, NCC. Nwodo also complained that it took Buhari five months to appoint ministers and another five months to prepare his budget.

However, according to Ngige,”the agitation for restructuring did not start now. It has been there for a long time. No democratic regime in the history of this country has been able to create states.

Apart the First Republic when the Mid-Western State was created, all other states created were under the military era. The six geopolitical zone structure is not even in the 1999 Constitution. But the NCC recommendations under Abacha which I consider as excellent made provision for rotational presidency and residency rights. Late Abacha crafted a wonderful constitution but Gen. Abubakar back-tracked. Instead of using what Abacha did, he went and amended portions of the 1979 Constitution which is responsible for the country’s woos. The NCC convoked by former President Jonathan is suspect because the members to the conference were not elected. So, there is no sovereign element in the outcome of the conference. The only sovereignty rests with the National Assembly where you have elected representatives from all parts of the country."

Defending the position of the present administration not to touch the 2014 NCC recommendations, Ngige further said: that “If by tomorrow, President Muhammadu Buhari decides to set up a constitutional conference, the Igbo should go to sleep because whatever gains they make there will not be taken away by anybody.”

Ngige then asked the Igbo to stop wallowing in self- pity over the political problems facing the race, saying that the people should “put on their thinking caps” on how to solve their problems well.

Buhari’s Sectional Appointments: Labour Minister, Ngige Booed In South-East Town Hall Meeting

Senator Chris Ngige, Nigeria’s minister of labour and productivity, was on Monday afternoon booed in Enugu as he made efforts to defend President Muhammadu Buhari’s appointments.

There have been knocks on Buhari over his appointments since he assumed office, as they are believed to be totally sectional.

The South-East region, which has no representation among the Service Chiefs, has continued to groan over the situation.

At the town hall meeting organized by the Federal Government on Monday at the Nike Lake Resort, Enugu, the lop-sided appointments took the centre stage.

Also in the front burner was issue of the Deputy Senate President, Chief Ike Ekweremadu, as the Ohanaeze Ndigbo vowed to resist any move by a certain cabal to remove him.

While Ngige struggled to convince the gathering, they repeatedly shouted “No oooo”, to him.

Ngige had tried to defend President Buhari by stating that anyone in position of authority would work with people he could trust.

He cited Enugu State as an example, noting erroneously that the Chief of Staff to Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi must be from Nsukka, the Governor’s zone.

However, the people of South-East at the meeting faulted him immediately, maintaining that Governor Ugwuanyi’s Chief of Staff was from Abia State and not Nsukka.

BREAKING: Your Sectionalism Unprecedented, Nepotism Is Also Corruption – Punch Tells Buhari

National daily newspaper, PUNCH, have criticised the appointments made by President Muhammadu Buhari. The paper has averred that the President “is by his appointments, presenting himself as a parochial, sectional leader”, adding that the level of sectionalism exhibited by Buhari is unprecedented.

While reminding Buhari of his inaugural speech declaration of “I belong to everybody and I belong to nobody”, the national daily, in an editorial published on Monday, noted that the President has breached the pledge, the newspaper advised him to act like a father to all Nigerians and rise above primordial instincts.

“Among his first appointments, even while he dithered on assembling a cabinet: he recalled a retired officer to man the Department of State Services; a former army officer to head the Nigeria Customs Service; a personal acquaintance as Chief of Staff, and loaded the other security and law enforcement agencies heavily in favour of Northerners. While the DSS head is from his hometown, Daura, the others are also almost all Northerners and overwhelmingly Muslims. In spite of public opinion, he replaced the immediate past Inspector-General of Police, a Southerner, with a Northerner, an assistant inspector-general whose ascension induced the retirement in one fell swoop of 21 DIGs and AIGs who were senior to him. This is beyond absurdity.

“We declare emphatically that this is corruption. It is wrong to view stealing of government funds as the only form of corruption. A former member of the House of Representatives, Junaid Muhammed, alleges that not only is Buhari sectional in his appointments, several appointees are actually his relatives. Nigerians did not vote against the Jonathan administration’s impunity for corruption, only to be assaulted with another pernicious impunity for cronyism,” the newspaper wrote.

The editorial read in part, “He struck again last month when he removed Ibe Kachikwu as head of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation to put a Northerner; named another, Hadiza Bala-Usman, as managing director of the Nigerian Ports Authority along with three executive directors, two of whom are also Northerners. Before then, he had ring-fenced himself with appointees from his northern constituency at the Presidency, thereby deepening the long-held fears of many Southerners that he has not overcome his well-known insularity.

“But the 1999 Constitution explicitly stipulates in Chapter 14 subsection 3 that the “composition of the Government of the Federation or any of its agencies and the conduct of its affairs shall…reflect the federal character of Nigeria and the need to promote national unity, and also to command national loyalty, thereby ensuring that there shall be no predominance of persons from a few states or from a few ethnic or other sectional groups…” Buhari is breaching this with impunity in his appointments. Apart from this, Nigeria’s plural setting demands that no group or ethnic nationality is seen as too domineering in critical areas of governance.

“Buhari should be told that sectionalism and nepotism are also acts of corruption. You do not wage war against financial corruption while indulging in sectional and sectarian favouritism.

It is self-defeating; a veritable weak link that the formidable ranks of those fighting back furiously to preserve the existing corrupt order are already capitalising on. The President simply does not need this. Many are willing to concede that he is only demonstrating political naiveté; now, however, is the time to radically change tactics.

“The country is in a bad shape, compelling that all efforts be made to rally all segments of the polity behind measures to reverse economic recession, defeat terrorism in the North-East, renewed militancy and sabotage in the South-South zone, Fulani herdsmen’s terrorism in the North-Central and general insecurity across the country. The government admitted that the country is technically in recession last week, while Bloomberg reported that foreign reserves fell to just over $26 billion in June; oil production also fell to about 1.6 million barrels per day, while over 4,440 megawatts of power were lost last week, both due to sabotage of crude and gas facilities by criminals in the Niger Delta region. Meanwhile, though seriously degraded, Boko Haram terrorists are recovering their ability to ambush and inflict casualties on Nigerian troops.

“More importantly, the South-East and South-South zones voted massively against Buhari, who is deepening their alienation from his government by his lopsided appointments. But in truly democratic societies, elected leaders go all out to unite their people after elections. Apart from meeting the constitutional requirement that a minister be appointed from each of the 36 states, the two zones are sparsely represented in the Federal Government. If some past presidents indulged in primitive sectionalism, Buhari should not.”

Buhari Should Not Ask Me Source Of Jonathan’s Money For Media – Dokpesi Explodes

Chief Raymond Dokpesi, the founder of DAAR Communications Plc, who is seeking to become the next National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has reacted angrily to the money laundering charges preferred against him by the federal government.

Dokpesi, who spoke at the weekend, when his campaign train stopped at Osogbo, the capital of Osun State, accused President Muhammadu Buhari of using the same tactics he used in 1983 when as military head of state, he “clamped down on the political class”.

His words: “Many of these politicians were jailed 200 to 300 years by Buhari when he came on board. The same thing is playing out today.

“What I am accused of is like someone questioning a hotelier for accepting money from a lodger. How could a hotelier determine the source of the money he is being paid with.

“How will I know source for media campaign of a party?

“I don’t want to dwell much on the subject. The matter is before a competent court of law. At the appropriate time, I will be vindicated.”

Dokpesi, however, promised to ensure that all interests within the PDP are united.

The High Chief disclosed that if elected, he would review all reports of past reconciliatory committees to stop the worrying issue of factions in the PDP.

I’m Not Under ICPC Probe, Says Ex-Gov Daniel

Otunba Gbenga Daniel, the former governor of Ogun State, yesterday described as false reports that there is a pending corruption case against him at the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission, ICPC.

The former Ogun state governor was listed as one of the affected former governors, with a list that included Senate President Bukola Saraki, former Akwa Ibom State Governor, Godswill Akpabio, former Rivers State Governor, Peter Odili, and ex-Governor Rashidi Ladoja of Oyo State.

In the letter, Malami was quoted as saying that: “It is clear that some of these governors and other politically-exposed persons have not been charged to court, despite the fact that the ICPC has concluded their investigations, concerning allegations levelled against them, for one reason or the other.''

“It is the position of the present administration that all ex-governors, who the ICPC had long concluded investigations into the various allegations levelled against them, should be immediately prosecuted.”

“I categorically declare that I have no issues with ICPC whatsoever and I am sure that a mistake have been made either deliberately or otherwise in this issue and others,” Daniel said.
