UK AND SWITZERLAND IS WHERE STOLEN FUNDS ARE TAKEN - FOREIGN AFFAIRS MINISTER

Foreign Affairs Minister, Mr. Godfrey Onyeama, said yesterday that he had met with Switzerland representatives over the modalities for repatriating loots in their custody.

While addressing newsmen yesterday, Onyeama said apart from switzerland that has a large chunk of the siphoned money from Nigeria, discussions are ongoing with the UK government on how to repatriate Nigeria's stolen funds.

He also noted that President Muhammadu Buhari ‘s maiden visit to United States has also helped softening the ground for the discussions on the repatriation of the funds.

His words; “We are in negotiation with countries for the repatriation of the stolen funds stashed in other countries. We are in touch with the government of Switzerland and we recently recovered quite some huge amount of money. Just last week, I met with Switzerland representatives to work out the modalities for the repatriation of the fund.

“There is still ongoing discussion with other countries like United Kingdom. The goodwill generated by President Buhari  especially with his first visit to United States has helped enormously in the whole process. And many other countries have been helping in terms of cooperation.”

Speaking on Abacha's loot, the minister said; ” they have already repatriated $700 million and it was channeled into some programmes that were set for it. There is ongoing discussion on another fund of over 300 million dollars for repatriation,” he said.
