This week, YouTubers ASAPScience investigate science-backed tips which can increase morning alertness - but you aren’t going to like them all.
Sadly, it turns out that cold showers - beloved of masochists the world over - actually do work, at least when it comes to increasing alertness.
ASAPScience says, ‘End your shower with cold water. Studies have shown that cold water can activate components of the brain responsible for regulating wakefulness, making you feel alert.
‘Shock of cold water can increase your metabolic rate further, reducing feelings of fatigue.
If you feel groggy in the morning, it might well be dehydration - you sweat as you sleep.
ASAPSCience says, ‘ Even mild dehydration decreases alertness, so in the morning grab a glass of water.’
What you eat can also be key - what you need are complex carbohydrates (ie porridge, as opposed to a sugary snack).
ASAPScience says, ‘If the meal is high in fibre and carbohydrates, alertness lasts longer.’
