HERDSMEN KILLINGS: CAN FILES COMPLAINT AT HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION

The Christian Association of Nigeria has filed a complaint at the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) over alleged killings and destruction of property by suspected Fulani herdsmen in Benue State.

The Benue State chapter of the Association filed the petition on Wednesday.

The Chief Information Officer of the Commission says the Executive Secretary of NHRC, Prof. Bem Angwe, while receiving the report expressed sadness over the killings.

Prof. Angwe said the attacks have continued over time and a lot of people have lost their lives.

Professor Angwe promised that the commission would carry out an impartial investigation into the matter and also ensure that justice prevails at the end of the day.

He also called on the federal and state governments to take proactive steps to restore the affected families to their original abode in order to avert hunger as the farmers, whose produce feed the nation, no longer go to their farms for fear of attacks.

The statement added the CAN Chairman, Benue State Chapter, Rev. Augustine Akpen Leva, expressed dismay at what it described as the failure of government to curb the incessant, unwarranted killings and wanton destruction of property allegedly perpetrated by suspected Fulani herdsmen against the people of Benue State.

Earlier, Nigerian governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have visited Enugu State to sympathize with Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi over the attacks by suspected fulani herdmen.

On April 25, 2016, Nimbo, Uzo-Uwani community in Enugu state, was invaded by suspected herdsmen. The police said nine persons were killed in the attack not 20 people as widely reported.

At the Government House in Enugu state, the APC governors condemned the attack insisting that the perpetrators must be brought to book.

Governor of Borno State, Kashim Shettima, said he understood the pains the people of Enugu State were going through, having been entangled in the deadly attacks of Boko Haram daily.
