The writer claims that executives at BBC Scotland suggested that he pitch his script to BBC Two instead - as it was ‘too intellectual’ for Scottish viewers.
Glaswegian writer Colin Edwards said in a blog post that he was advised that Scottish people tend to prefer ‘blokey’ comedies, preferably set in Glasgow.
The BBC denies the claims.
Edwards claims that a BBC exec said, ‘English people are more, shall we say… ‘comfortable’ with intelligent comedy. They feel less threatened by it.’
Edwards claims that BBC execs told him that their audience was only interested in comedy set in, ‘Glasgow, preferably male-centric and with no references to anything that could be construed as ‘intellectual’ or cultured otherwise’.
Edwards admits that the alleged conversation happened ‘some years ago’ – and the BBC denies the claims.
