STUDY REVEALS HOW TO IMPROVE BABIES' COGNITIVE SKILLS [MUST READ]

Letting babies play with musical instruments might be grating for parents, but it can help them pick up language skills, experts have said.

American researchers compared nine-month-old babies as they played, using brain scanners.

They found that babies who played with drums had more brain activity in regions involved in detecting patterns than those who played with lorries - crucial when it comes to learning language.

Dr Christina Zhao of the University of Washington said ‘Our study is the first in young babies to suggest that experiencing a rhythmic pattern in music can also improve the ability to detect and make predictions about rhythmic patterns in speech, Robwaugh gathered.

‘This means that early, engaging musical experiences can have a more global effect on cognitive skills.’

‘In both the music and control groups, we gave babies experiences that were social, required their active involvement and included body movements — these are all characteristics that we know help people learn,“ Dr Zhao said.

‘The key difference between the play groups was whether the babies were moving to learn a musical rhythm.
