The Nigeria senate has mandated the Senate Committees on Information and
Trade & Investment to investigate DSTV over arbitrary increase in subscription
charges, refusal to adopt pay ''as-you-use'' model applicable in other
countries, poor service delivery and absence of toll free lines for
customers complaints.
Senate on Wednesday accused Multichoice, owners of the DSTV of exploiting Nigerians through incessant hike of their subscription charges in the country, Daily Trust reports.
In moving the motion, Misau said the company dominate the Nigerian satellite television market, thereby enabling it to engage in negative and unhealthy practices.
He said Nigerians are concern over arbitrary increase in subscription charges, refusal to adopt pay 'as-you-use' model applicable in other countries, poor service delivery and absence of toll free lines for customers complaints.
In their contributions, Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu (PDP, Enugu West) Senator Bala Ibn Na'Allah (APC, Kebbi South), said many foreign companies are exploiting Nigerians and advocated for the strengthening of the Consumers Protection Council.

But Senator Olanrewaju Tejuoso (APC, Ogun Central) opposed the motion,
saying the services of the DSTV are only for rich few Nigerians.
However, the Senators mandated the Senate Committees on Information and Trade & Investment to investigate and consider summoning the top officials of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) and Consumer Protection Council (CPC) over the issue.
In his remarks, the Senate President Bukola Saraki said they will continue to safeguard the interest of Nigerian consumers.
He gave the two Committees four weeks to investigate the activities of the DSTV in the country.
However, the Senators mandated the Senate Committees on Information and Trade & Investment to investigate and consider summoning the top officials of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) and Consumer Protection Council (CPC) over the issue.
