US Warns Citizens Against Travelling To 20 Nigerian States

According to the travel advice on the Department of State's website, the United States of America has warned its citizens against travelling to 20 states in Nigeria due to security concerns with the North-Eastern states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa, where the Boko Haram terrorists were more brutal, topping the list.

It read: “The Department of State warns U.S. citizens of the risks of travelling to Nigeria and recommends that U.S. citizens avoid all travel to Adamawa, Borno, and Yobe states because the security situation in northeast Nigeria remains fluid and unpredictable. The Department of State strongly urges U.S. citizens in Nigeria to consider their own personal security and to keep personal safety in the forefront of their travel planning. This Travel Warning replaces the Travel Warning for Nigeria dated February 5, 2016.

"The ability of the Mission to provide assistance to U.S. citizens in Adamawa, Borno, and Yobe states remains severely limited. The Department recommends against all but essential travel to the following states due to the risk of kidnappings, robberies, and other armed attacks: Bauchi, Bayelsa, Delta, Edo, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Kogi, Niger, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, and Zamfara.

"The Department also warns against travel in the Gulf of Guinea because of the threat of piracy. Based on safety and security risk assessments, the Embassy maintains restrictions for travel by U.S. officials to the states listed above; officials must receive advance clearance by the U.S. Mission for any travel to those states.

“ The U.S. Mission advises all U.S. citizens to be particularly vigilant around government security facilities; churches, mosques, and other places of worship; locations where large crowds may gather, such as hotels, clubs, bars, restaurants, markets, shopping malls; and other areas frequented by expatriates and foreign travelers.

Sultan Calls For Int’l Support On Anti-Corruption War

Sa'ad Abubakar IV, the Sultan of Sokoto, yesterday in the United States of America, USA, pleaded with the international community to increase material and logistic support for President Muhammadu Buhari to fight and win the anti-corruption war.

The Sultan while speaking with top United States government officials at the Woodrow Wilson Centre said he not only endorsed the war against corruption, but also decried the conversion of funds meant for purchase of arms to fight Boko Haram to personal use by few Nigerians.

He noted that the money would have enhanced the capacity of the Nigerian military to fast track the fight against insurgency and possibly curtail the menace in the North-East Nigeria.

The Director of Woodrow Wilson Centre extolled the leadership qualities of the Sultan, he also thanked him for his tremendous support and assistance to United States agencies working on health-related and development issues in Nigeria.

FG, U.S. Partner On Fair Labour Practices

Minister of Labour and Employment, Sen. Chris Ngige, has said that the Federal Government would partner the United States on fair labour practices to boost international trade relations in the Nigeria.

Ngige said this when he received Mr Marlin Hardinger, the Political Officer in the U.S. Embassy, in Abuja.

The minister who released a statement through Mr Samuel Olowookere, Deputy Director, Press, Ministry of Labour and Employment, said, “We appreciate the American government for taking this step. It is pleasing to note that you are synergising with the International Labour Organisation to make this workable.

“This is really a big boost to trade not only in Nigeria, but in the entire continent of Africa.

“I have often thought of the workability of trade without productivity and its implication for a developing country like ours. The decision of your government to tie the two is re-awakening and important to us.

“Though trade relations between our two countries have receded following the decision of your country to stop the import of crude from Nigeria, we have a vast agricultural product base which can find ready market in the U.S.

“It is distressing, however, that even trade in this area is equally on downward swing,” he said.

“What we are looking for is a Nigeria that is prosperous and stable enough to remain a rallying point in the comity of nations and not necessarily a supper power.

“We will partner you in this effort,” Ngige said.
