OPINION POLL: Economic Hardship Heightening Domestic Violence In Nigeria – Survey

A recent Public Opinion poll conducted by NOIPolls Limited in partnership with Project Alert on domestic violence has revealed an increasing prevalence of domestic violence across Nigeria in recent times as reported by about 8 in 10 (78 percent) respondents.

The poll showed that domestic violence has been heightened by the economic hardship in Nigeria.

The poll measured the opinion of Nigerians on the increasing prevalence of domestic violence in Nigeria and the results showed that 78 percent of Nigerians nationwide stated that there is an increasing prevalence of domestic violence in Nigeria, and this view was evenly shared across gender, geo-political zones and age-groups.

Further results from the poll revealed that despite its prohibition by Section 34 (1) of the 1999 Constitution, which guarantees the rights of all against torture and other cold-hearted or degrading treatment; the largest proportion of the respondents (97 percent) who believe there is an increasing prevalence of domestic violence in Nigeria stated that domestic violence of men against women is highly/somewhat prevalent in the Nigerian society and this is the same across all geo-political zones.

Other segments of the respondents believe that men are also at the receiving end of domestic violence in Nigerian homes, as 47 percent stated that domestic violence of women against men is also prevalent.

The North-East geopolitical zone (79 percent) make up the highest proportion of respondents with this perception, although, 53 percent have a contrary opinion stating that domestic violence of women against men is non prevalent or non-existent in the Nigerian society.

Meanwhile, 79 percent also mentioned domestic violence against children is highly prevalent, and this is the same across all geopolitical zones.

The prevalence according to the study is highest in the South-West geo-political zone (86 percent) and lowest in the South-South zone (70 percent).

More findings revealed that 54 percent of Nigerians have suffered a form of domestic violence or know someone that has experienced domestic violence in their homes with majority of the victims being women as stated by 75 percent of respondents, although ‘men’ (16 percent) and ‘children’ (9 percent) are also known to be victims of domestic violence.

Moreover findings from a similar poll conducted by NOIPolls in 2012 which revealed that 4 percent of the respondents were victims and 29 percent indicated they know victims of domestic violence, potrays an increase in the occurrence of domestic violence in Nigeria when these figures are compared to recent figures.

An evaluation of the causes of domestic violence in Nigeria revealed that Nigerians perceive ‘economic hardship’ (42 percent), ‘misunderstanding between couples’ (21 percent) and ‘impatience’ (9 percent) as the main causes of domestic violence in Nigerian homes.

Furthermore, the poll revealed that victims of domestic violence do not take any action about their cases, implying that most domestic violence cases go unreported.

These victims do not take any action mainly ‘to avoid stigmatization’ (34 percent), while in other cases it could be as a result of ignorance and illiteracy of victims (21 percent), emotional attachment to their spouses and partners (18 percent) and fear of threat or insecurity (17 percent).

While several individuals, civil society organisations and other relevant stakeholders have risen to fight against the prevalance of this evil in the Nigerian society, Nigerians have suggested that the fostering of mutual understanding in marriages and relationships as well as proper enlightenment on marriage amongst other suggestions will play critical roles in reducing the prevalence of domestic violence in Nigeria.

Recruitment: PSC Warns Applicants Against Fraudsters

Mr Mike Okiro, the Chairman, Police Service Commission ( PSC), in a statement issued by Mr Ikechukwu Ani, Head, Press and Public Relations of the commission on Tuesday in Abuja, warned unsuspecting applicants to beware of activities of fraudsters.

Okiro advised applicants to restrain themselves from being desperate for recruitment into the Force, saying that he has no Facebook account and had never operated any before.

The chairman said that the fraudsters had started demanding money from applicants of the ongoing recruitment.

“The Commission recently concluded the State screening and would in no distant time begin the second phase of the process leading to the recruitment, “he said.

He reiterated his earlier statement that the recruitment would be transparent and based on merit.

Okiro said that the commission would resist any pressure to undermine or compromise the integrity of the process and the outcome of the exercise.

He said anybody paying for any assistance to be recruited into the force would be disappointed.

He stressed that security operatives were on the alert to arrest those giving and those that were receiving.

The chairman advised the public to report to the commission any underhand practices in respect of the recruitment.

“If they ask you to bring money, whether the fraudsters, our Staff or Policemen, report to us and we will arrest and prosecute the person or persons,” he said.

He said that successful applicants from the state screening would soon be invited for the next level of the process.

Self-Medication: The Disadvantages, Dangers

By Dorcas Omolade Ore |

For diverse reasons, self-medication has become rampant in the society. It is now a common trend for people, whenever they are ill, to source over-the-counter drugs or simply proceed to treat themselves of self-diagnosed symptoms, without consulting medical professionals. Many people opt for this method because they feel it is cheaper and easier. Some of the reasons those engaging in this act give include, economic and social. While some say the economic hardship is forcing them to do this, others see going to the hospital or consulting medical practitioners a waste of time.

Ashaolu Omoniyi is a Biochemistry student of Yaba College of Technology, Lagos. He is one of those that regularly engage in self-prescribed drugs to treat every illness. He said: “I can’t even remember the last time I visited the hospital. The only sickness I often have is malaria, and anytime I am down with it, I just walk into any nearest chemist to get pain killers and antibiotics and I will be okay. The economic situation of the country does not encourage someone like me to visit the hospital. Why should I go to the hospital to treat common malaria, when I can treat myself? As a student, you don’t expect me to use the little feeding money I have on drugs or paying any doctor for consultation.”

Similarly, Paschal Ojogbane, a banker with a GTB branch in Lagos, told The Guardian that he rarely consults medical practitioners, whenever he is sick, as he believes in self-medication.

“For cases such as malaria, buying drugs without prescription is not bad. Overtime, I have come to know that anti malaria and vitamin C are the general drugs for treating malaria and they work well for me,” he said. “These are not serious, life-threatening cases. I only go to my family hospital, when I have a major health challenge that I can’t handle. To be honest with you, with the current state of the economy, going to hospitals and paying consultation fee and all other fees just to see a doctor, is difficult.”

Peace Sholanke, a hair-stylist in Bariga, a Lagos suburb, does not also go to the hospital when ill. As her only sickness is malaria, she feels there is no need wasting scarce resources on paying doctors. She has her own unique method of curing herself, whenever the illness strikes.

“Whenever I have malaria, I take anti malaria tablets, cough mix, antibiotics, blood tonic and another drug, which I cannot readily remember now. This is the same combination with which I treat my children anytime I notice they are not feeling fine,” she said.
But experts are saying that the disadvantages and dangers of self-prescription or self-medication are often life threatening, which most Nigerians failed to understand.

Dr. Okaiwele Oseyi Emmanuel, a senior Registrar at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, explained to The Guardian that some of the reasons Nigerians indulge in self-medication is due to its convenience and cost reduction, among others.

“Often times, people fail to realise that the dangers in it are greater than the benefits. These include: incorrect self-diagnosis, delays in seeking medical advice, as soon as it is needed, dangerous drug interactions, incorrect choice of therapy, drug dependence and abuse. Other risks are, incorrect manner of administration and the masking of a severe disease, which could progressively worsen before appropriate treatment is sought and initiated,” he explained.

In his view, it is ironical that many patients still consult doctors after trying self-medication, but in many cases, such late attempts could be fatal.“If a patient has already self-medicated, it is difficult for us to deal with a good diagnosis. Then, the patient could also develop certain resistance to certain drugs. So, if we prescribe another medicine, it will not react efficiently,” he said.

Researches have shown that self-medication is not on the increase only in Nigeria, as nationals of most developing countries, where the economy is not good and their governments don’t provide adequate healthcare indulge in it. “This is because there is less restriction on over-the-counter drug purchase,” Okaiwele said. “Another factor contributing to this is widespread poverty, because it is cheaper to self medicate than consult a health professional.”

He, however, advised that considering the dangers inherent in self-medication, it should be discouraged at all levels. It is imperative that individuals consult health professionals for correct diagnosis and treatments, as this would help prevent unnecessary and dangerous drug interactions and resistance. It would also help to prevent long-term consequences of self-medication such as liver or kidney failure, which are debilitating and expensive.

To tackle the problem, experts are advocating that the practice be reduced through massive and continuous enlightenment on the demerits and dangers of self-medication. Also, it can be reduced by restricting the sale and purchase of drugs, which are potentially harmful to members of the public by making it illegal for pharmacies to dispense without a doctor’s prescription.

Though the agency saddled with the task of controlling the distribution and use of drugs, the Nigerian Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), has recently increased its supervision of drug markets, especially with regards to the sales and distribution of fake, substandard and expired drugs, experts are, however, of the opinion that more efforts need to be put into the restriction of sale of drugs, which ordinarily should not be over-the-counter.

“The National Orientation Agency (NOA) should also put more efforts into educating the public about the dangers of self-medication with television and newspaper adverts and radio jingles,” Okaiwele said.

Funny Sign Boards You'll See Only In Nigeria - Jokes

Nigerians have taken to the act of writing on sign boards like fish to water. I mean we love big sign boards that warn you to cease
and desist from doing stuff. This is because we know our countrymen hardly ever listen if you tell them. Nor do they like doing the right thing except you threaten them.

Sign boards are meant to be informative, threatening (only in Naija), easy to read and many other things. But not these sign boards!

Check out these sign boards below, the most hilarious I’ve ever seen anywhere:

N-Delta Is A Lawless Region — Omolubi Newuwumi

Mr. Omolubi Newuwumi, a former Commissioner in Delta State and Itsekri ethnic nationality leader, has said in an interview that there is no rule of law in Niger Delta and government has not really shown interest in deploying police officers to the creeks to protect people.

Newuwumi, said: ”I have critically looked into the problem in the Niger Delta and place it on two things. One, there is no rule of law in place and secondly, there is insecurity of lives and properties.”

He said” “The people of Niger Delta region have been living together without the enforcement of the rule of law by the government and this is because they did not send policemen to this area to enforce law and order in the region.”
Self-inflicted disorder

On why he described Niger Delta as an uncontrolled region, he had this to say: “Let me tell you a short story, I was once in the Nigeria Boys Scout, when I was in primary school I joined the scout just in order to enforce discipline on myself and to be a law- abiding citizen. As a scout at that time, we carry out arrest concerning criminal matters.”

“The Boys Scout and Boys Brigade as at then were like the Police and the Man o War was like the Army known by the people. Today, an army general cannot arrest a common criminal in the same region. What has led to this? Permit me to use this saying by the English man, ‘if it is not a treasure, it cannot be found, if it is not gold, it cannot be seen’”.

“What do I mean by this? I mean that the government and the white men have found a treasure in our villages, which is now the gold (crude oil) ,because the worth of a treasure can raise a country’s economy to the highest in the world, that treasure is now transformed to gold and any quality gold can change the world, not to mention a country. This is the reason behind the lawlessness in this region.

“The reason is because it is not properly handled by the federal and state government. I am using this forum to say that I know and understand that the inability of a country to manage its success. This can result to crisis or anarchy that can lead to the division of the country in parts and this is the case of Nigeria today,” Newuwumi said.

The guidelines also advised Nigerians to: “practice safer sex, including the consistent and correct use of condoms, or abstain from sex during their stay in Brazil; “after the Games, women who discover they are pregnant during their travel or shortly after returning from Brazil should contact their healthcare providers for counselling about Zika virus risks and pregnancy management;

• after the Games, all travellers should practice safer sex, including the correct and consistent use of condoms, or abstain from sex for at least eight weeks after their return;

• men who experience symptoms of Zika virus disease during or after their return, should adopt safer sex practices or abstain from sex for at least six months;

• pregnant women whose sexual partners travelled to Brazil should practice safer sex practices or abstain from sex for the duration of their pregnancy. Couples or women planning a pregnancy should wait at least eight weeks after return from Brazil before trying to conceive; and 6 months if the male partner was symptomatic;

• all travellers should use personal protective measures such as insect repellent for at least three weeks after returning from the Games to avoid being bitten and potentially spreading the infection to other people through mosquito bites; and,

• travellers should not donate blood for at least four weeks after departure from Brazil to reduce the potential risk of onwards transmission.

The NOC also advised Nigerians to “be up to date with all the common childhood vaccinations before visiting Brazil (you may even need a booster). This includes immunizations for Tetanus and Diphtheria, Whooping cough (Pertussis), Hepatitis B, polio, measles, mumps and rubella (MMR).

Brazil is listed by the World Health Organization (WHO) as endemic for Yellow Fever. A Yellow Fever vaccination is compulsory.” It added that the full two-dose Hepatitis A vaccine is strongly recommended when visiting Brazil and other precautions for hygiene and food safety should be taken.

Open Letter To Christians From A Former Muslim Man

Ishaku Abdul’rahman Mohammed, in an open letter to Christians claims to have converted to Christianity from Islam. He however advises Christians not to be lured to change their religion.

Ishaku narrates about the ways of Islamisation agenda in Nigeria in the first part, while in the second part he explains, with Islamic teachings why Muhammadu Buhari is making some of his moves without caring about the feelings and sensibilities of Christians in Nigeria.

In his letter which he addressed to senseless Christians, he said,: "From what I see today in Nigeria I am very certain that Muslims would not need to use a violent jihad to Islamize Nigeria. Christians themselves will be used by Muslims to Islamize Nigeria. Afterwards the Muslims will turn against the Christians that helped them. These are the type Muslims call the useful idiots.

"Just ask yourself how Muslim nations became Islamic nations? Is there any record of them doing evangelical work? Did they tell people about how wonderful their prophet Mohammed is? How he raped women? How he beheaded nine hundred Jews in one day? How he had sex with a nine-year old girl? How he was demon possessed for one year? How he could not perform a miracle? How he is a prophet without a prophecy? How he sold slaves for weapons of war?

"If Muslims did not do evangelism how come there are 58 nations of the world who say they are Islamic countries? Including countries that used to be Christian countries.

"Many Christians will be lured with money to change to Muslim and by boyfriend girlfriend and inter marriage. Remember, the project is being sponsored by Saudi Arabia and Nigeria government therefore; money to convert Christians to Muslim will not be a problem. Please don’t tell me you can never be lured with money." He said.

On the ways they intend to use in Islamizing Nigeria, he had this to say: "Buhari just registered Nigeria in the Islamic coalition against terrorism led by Saudi Arabia. The first major conference Buhari would bring to Nigeria is the International Islamic Conference".

"Muslims are now using El Rufai Kaduna state as a test case to see how they can stop Christians from preaching the gospel not even for you to listen to a gospel message in your car. Who knows they may even ban gospel music. Other northern states are copying Mr El Rufai’s law. Fulani herdsmen are sacking Christian villages in the north. The only minister to have died under Buhari happens to be a Christian. The only minister to have died under Buhari happens to be a Christian," he said.

Narrating how he converted to Christianity, Ishaku had this to say in his second letter,: "I used to be a Muslim but now a Christian. I have been in hiding because anyone born a Muslim and converts to Christianity has a death sentence on his head. It is even worse now that they know I have decided to reveal their hidden agenda to the Nigerian Christians who stupidly voted Buhari.

"So much has happened since my last letter and God willing, I will continue to educate you as things unfold. Please pray for me because the forces of darkness are arrayed against me for telling the truth. And if you ever hear that I get killed don’t weep for me. Just know I have finished my race and am with the Lord Jesus. The same Jesus I rejected all my life as Muslim. The same Jesus I called a prophet of Allah who is a little lower that the false prophet Mohammed. To Jesus alone to be all the praise, glory and honor for saving me from the satanic cult called Islam. I now worship this same Jesus and will do so till am expire.

"Muslims occupy a lot of high positions in PMB government
Have you noticed that whenever any Christian, occupying a high position in any government agency is removed only Muslims get to replace him or her?

"200 military officers were retired recently and guess what? They were either southerners or Northern Christians. As far as the northern Muslim is concerned, if you are a southerner you are a Christian. And being a Christian means you are the worst creatures of Allah. Now you may ask why that is important." He said.

"I want to advice Niger Delta never to disarm. There is what we call in Islam, the treaty of hudaibiya. This is the peace agreement that their prophet, Mohammed had with the meccans. The peace treaty was to last for ten years but Mohammed, seeing that the meccans had relaxed, launched a military campaign two years into the peace treaty and that was how Mecca fell to Islam.

"This was Yar A’dua’s plan when he gave the militants amnesty. Had he lived longer the amnesty would have been stopped. Buhari actually thought that the militants had fully disarmed hence he stopped the amnesty. I guess Jonathan by the leading of the Lord empowered them even more militarily before he left. Mohammed said war is deception."

"The GMD of NNPC Mr Kachikwu was just relieved of his position and guess who replaced him? Another Muslim. Now they have started instituting corruption charges against him. One down more to go. Soon Amaechi will go too. Almost every Christian is out of government. All the military chiefs are Muslims. Custom, immigration etc are all headed by Muslims now.

"Yet my fellow senseless Christians still cannot see what is happening. Did you know that the new IG of police is also a Muslim? Do you know how many senior officers were retired just to pave the way for the new IG? Guess the first thing he did? Accused the former IG of stealing 24 police vehicles. Thank God that alarm was proven false but they never give up. They must find some frivolous charges against him. Just wait and see," he said.

"Talking about a Christian president. Do you know that in Islam it is forbidden for a Christian to hold a position of authority over Muslims? Since they could not deny the achievements of our Christian ex-president Dr Goodluck Jonathan they spun a huge propaganda around corruption. He was vilified as the most corrupt president Nigeria ever had. The press had a field day reporting monumental corruption under Jonathan. They knew the only way they could get the attention of the Nigerian is to mention corruption and we all fell for the deception hook, line and sinker. I will be naive to say there was no corruption under GEJ. No government in the world can claim to be corruption free. Yet it was made to look like Jonathan had stolen the wealth of the nation and crippled the economy. Buhari made huge promises that got people ecstatic. He was seen as the Messiah. Nigerians refused to see the economic growth under GEJ," he said.

"Even when Nigeria was rated as the third and first fastest growing economy in the world and Africa no one paid any heed to it. Nigeria became the number one investment destination in Africa yet it seemed like it was all fairy tale. Today, just one year after GEJ we are no longer in the list of growing economies of the world. The effects are everywhere. The Nigerian economy is almost grounding to a halt. And guess what? They have now spun propaganda that what we are experiencing now is the effect of the misrule of GEJ. Again, Christians are buying this crap and swallowing it like a hot plate of delicious food. Eight months into the Buhari regime, the bureau of national statistics releases a report that over 4.5 million Nigerians have lost their jobs under Buhari. Time will fail me to expatiate," he insisted.

"Have you noticed how Christians and Muslims are treated when it comes to corruption cases? They go to the media to convict people of corruption and when they eventually take them to court and the court gives a verdict they don’t like the disobey the court order. Mr Fani Kayode was in detention for over sixty days. You were told that it was because of corruption. How many Muslims have been so treated? As far as I know. Only Dasuki is getting that treatment but again that is understandable. It was Dasuki, then a very junior officer that arrested Buhari during the Babangida coup that overthrew Buhari in 1983. Muslims don’t forgive. The god of Islam requires Muslims to take vengeance unlike our God that says vengeance is mine.

"The most unfortunate part of this is that we Christians use our values to judge Muslims yet we know absolutely nothing about their values. We don’t know anything about the tenets of that religion. Mohammed was a very vengeful person. He killed all those who made fun of him. Even those who criticized him. That is why Buhari cannot stand criticism." He concluded.
