JUST IN: SENATE WITHDRAWS SUMMONS FOR CCT CHAIR

Nigeria’s Senate has reportedly withdrawn an order for the chairman of the Code of Conduct tribunal, Danladi Umar to appear before it.

In a letter on Monday, the Senate asked Umar to appear before it by 2pm on Thursday along with 12 copies of any written submission he may wish to present.

The summon had drawn criticism from The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) and foremost Human rights Lawyer Femi Falana who stated strongly that the Senate has no power to summon Umar.

According to reports, the Senate committee on ethics, privileges, and public petitions, composed of 11 members met on Wednesday at the National Assembly in Abuja and hastily decided to drop the summon issued to CCT chairman.

Danladi Umar is currently presiding over the trial of Senate President Bukola Saraki.

Saraki was charged before the Code of Conduct tribunal for false assets declaration while he was governor of Kwara State.

Umar had on Monday, said the trial would go on a daily from 10am -6pm.
