RE: PLEASE TELL CHARLY BOY TO STOP BEING HYPOCRITICAL

By Adebayo Raphael

The article written by Charles Chukwuemeka Oputa, A.K.A Charlie Boy few days ago in which he censured ace comedian Julius Agwu’s LIFE AS I SEE IT comedy show describing it as a show of ‘sermonized gospel rant and chant’ has whipped up diverse and conflicting sentiments from many Nigerians.

First, let me stand on existing protocols to congratulate Comedian Julius Agwu for his successful brain surgery and ultimately coming out of the jaws of death. May God elongate your life bros!

Back to the subject matter, truth be told, when you hear the word ‘comedy’ the first thing that comes to mind is ‘Laughter’. Anything less will be considered a disappointment.

More so, when you are told that a Julius Agwu, a top-notch Nigerian comedian is hosting a comedy show, you expect to turn up and be thrilled till you pass out.

However, the reverse seems to be the case for Uncle Charlie after he made his thoughts known through his recent publication.

Charly boy had described the show as one that made him felt ripped off and bored to tears.

However, there has been few dissenting views from Charly Boy's assertion and I have decided to align myself with the few who are not afraid to say things the way they are.

From the perspective of a free-thinker, you would expect that when you attend a comedy show, you should get nothing less than comedy. You would expect that some of many talents in the comedy business would light up your mood with undiluted, second-to-none comedy. Especially when it’s a show you paid for (Like Uncle Charlie asserted). Anything below that standard will definitely be regarded as a shambolic performance.

However, as a born-again Christian, even after attending the morning service on a Sunday, you won’t be ‘bored to tears’ by the story of a man who God has just delivered miraculously from a near-death situation. In addition, as a Christian, never have I heard from men of God or read in the holy book that thanksgiving should be restricted to a particular time of the day or done in privacy.

Meanwhile, I can authoritatively tell you that during the press release for this particular show, Julius Agwu unambiguously explained that the concert will be a platform to proclaim the goodness of God and that proceeds from the concert will be dedicated to charity.

Therefore, we cannot discard the fact that Uncle Charlie failed to connect with the theme properly and meticulously, hence, leading to his grandiose self-delusion of an all-comedy show. Even worse is, this act of negligence and unwillingness to pay attention to details has become the order of the day in this part of the world. And in this age and time, we cannot afford to continue seeing the most noticeable things only; it is time we come to grasp with the reality that being superficial makes simple situation complex and life difficult.

As long as there were other comedians at the event who gave ‘trickles of respite’ to attendees, according to Uncle Charlie, one would expect that their jokes would keep the atmosphere bubbling with excitement so much that no one will have to pay too much attention to Julius’ thanksgiving session since it was ‘boring.’

However, one interesting part in Uncle Charlie’s article was where he told us that Julius Agwu is a friend, brother, and one of the comedians who underwent the ‘University of CharlyBoyism’ which simply means they are quite close, right? But how do you describe a brother, friend, and self-acclaimed tutor who prefers to excoriate his fellow brother rather than correct him privately then claim to still love him? How could a true friend not understand the Godly intent of another friend thanking his creator?

Frankly, everything about that article was wrong except for the part that mentioned the event starting late which is literally synonymous to Nigerian events.

Uncle Charly, if truly you were bored to tears despite the outstanding performance of other artistes and comedians, then Julius Agwu cannot solve your problem. Therefore, I will advice that you remain ripped off and bored to tears!
