FG Committed To Anti-Tobacco Campaign— Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo (SAN) speaking at the Presidential Villa while receiving leaders of anti-tobacco NGO groups in the country, reiterated Federal Government’s commitment to the reduction of tobacco use among citizens, particularly exposure of underage children to smoking.

The Vice President lamented inadequate information about the dangers of smoking “which has made it difficult to convince many to quit the dangerous habit.”

Osinbajo said, “we need the public behind us in this engagement. We need to change the public perception that smoking is a matter of choice. We also need to be more creative in passing our messages and in developing policies.”

While lamenting tobacco products “proliferation” in the country, Professor Osinbajo hinted that government would be exploring strategies on how to reduce tobacco consumption.

“The Presidency will give every support that is needed to ensure that tobacco control laws and policies are effectively implemented in Nigeria,” he assured.

S H O C K E R: Repent Of Your Lies, God Does Not Speak To You – Nigerian US-Based Doctor Blasts Pastor Adeboye

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, Pastor Adeboye's marriage warning has continued to generate heat on the social media.

There was frenzy on social media recently over the advice by Pastor Adeboye to young men and women.

However, a Nigerian US-based medical doctor, Dr. Ijabla Raymond, in his own reaction, says he is convinced God does not speak to Pastor Adeboye.

The US-based medical doctor, in an open letter, wrote on his Facebook page thus: “The question that has been on my mind is: does that mean God is deaf? What parent makes their child beg (for one hour) for something they know the child needs? The truth is that prayers, besides making the believer to feel good about themselves, are an absolute waste of time.

“They do not grow the economy or an amputated limb. Youth unemployment is at an all-time high despite our regular night vigils, prayers and supplications – it is evident that a God who is interested in human welfare does not exist. If He did, malaria and cancers will not kill millions of children whilst He preoccupies Himself with consensual sex between homosexual cWouples.

“In our country, pastors are marriage counsellors, psychotherapists, psychiatrists and financial advisers all at once even though they are not appropriately trained for these roles. They tell women to go back to their violent husbands because, according to them, divorce is a sin against God. Many a woman has lost her life because of this advice. People like Adeboye are so influential anything they say is taken as the literal truth.

“Sadly, his comments portray a man who is out of touch with the realities of modern family life. More and more women are now in employment and some of them are the main providers for their families. Marriage is now regarded as a partnership rather than as a master-servant relationship. Some of the most celebrated chefs in western cultures are men – what is wrong with teaching our boys and young men to cook for themselves? Adeboye has similarly instructed his female followers not to marry men without jobs. But what happens when a man loses his job – should his wife divorce him?

“I feel sorry for the people who think God speaks through this man or through any man at all.

“If you want incontrovertible evidence that religion cannot reform the world, then consider the degree of theft and corruption in Nigeria. These problems have become endemic even though practically every Nigerian is a practising Muslim or Christian.

“Nigerian pastors have acquired a taste for private jets – ostensibly to reach the parts of the world that need the gospel of Jesus, except that they avoid such places as Pakistan, Afghanistan, Somalia and Iraq. Charity begins at home – it is senseless to run off to put out the fire in your neighbour’s house when your own house is up in flames.

“Nigerians and their country are in dire need of salvation from endemic corruption. It is evident that religion cannot transform our nation because as our religious devotions have increased, so have our corrupt ways.

“Pastor Adeboye and his other pastopreneur friends need to sell off their jets, repent of their lies, stop robbing their church members through emotional blackmail, and give back what they have stolen. Their message has failed. Adeboye’s gaffes were followed by the news that the Nigerian government is going to subsidise pilgrimage to Mecca by granting Muslims concessionary exchange rate.

“That is almost N8 billion for an exercise that does not benefit our economy. Many businesses are failing, parents are struggling to send their children to school, our hospitals are poorly resourced but that is how our government chooses to spend N8 billion. And believers wonder why we cannot stop talking about religion. There would be no use to criticise religion if it is removed from public space and kept as a private matter. It is wrong for the government to use tax payer’s money to subsidise religious rituals.

“The week ended with the RCCG convention where Adeboye makes his usual wild claims but says nothing of consequence about our nation. Our Vice President and a professor of law, Yemi Osibanjo, who also happens to be a pastor in the Redeemed Church watched on as Adeboye went to town with his preposterous claims.

“For a man who claims to have resurrected dead people, cured all kinds of diseases and driven a car without feel, you would think Adeboye would have told Vice President Osibanjo by now where to locate the abducted Chibok girls, right? But no, another RCCG convention has ended and not a word about their whereabout.

“When Adeboye claims that his car drives without fuel or that he has resurrected dead people and there’s a medical doctor, engineer, architect, research fellow, PhD holder or a professor in the congregation who believes this fantasy then I feel grief and have great concern for the education system that has nurtured such people.

“Religion has caused more harm than it has done good to African societies. Without a doubt, Adeboye and his fellow pastopreneurs have been responsible for the corruption in the way a generation of Nigerians think. But judging by the reactions to his sermon on social media, I think it is safe to say that the scales are starting to fall off the eyes of believers. I believe that pastor Adeboye will think twice now before re-telling his favourite story of how his car drives without fuel.

“I am thankful for the Internet and how it has placed knowledge at the fingertips (literally) of ordinary people. I pay tribute to fellow secularists for their unrelenting effort to liberate the minds of our people from the shackles of religion. Despite my grief, I feel hopeful about the future.”

Quit Politics If You Are Selfish – Jonathan Tells politicians

Immediate past President, Goodluck Jonathan at a press Conference in Lusaka, Zambia, has admonished selfish leaders against seeking political positions.

The former President urged politicians contesting various positions in the country’s August 11 general elections to accept results of the poll and avoid violence.

Jonathan is in Zambia as the Head of the African Union Election Observers.

His comment was contained in a statement by his media aide, Mr. Ikechukwu Eze.

According to Jonathan, “Politicians going in for elective positions should be open-minded about the outcome because they can either win or lose. Politicians who want to play meaningful roles in governance should realise that it is not about them. Those who care only about themselves should quit politics and begin to manage personal businesses.

“Our states are not private enterprises. You cannot be interested in governance without sufficient interest in the affairs of the people. So the interest of the country should come first as politicians tick their priority boxes.

“This also requires politicians to accept the outcome of genuine elections because of the interest of the people. You cannot instigate violence and mayhem on the one hand and pretend that you are fighting for the people on the other. It does not make any sense to get involved in bloodshed, destroy properties, frustrate businesses and collapse the economy in order to win elections. Our advice is to put public interest above other expectations by accepting the results of elections.”

Obasanjo Is The Most Corrupt Nigerian Leader Ever – Ghali Na’aba

Ghali Umar Na’aba, former Speaker of the House of Representatives, has said that former President, Olusegun Obasanjo remains the most corrupt Nigerian leader, adding that he had no moral right to criticize anyone assumed to be corrupt.

“I don’t think there is anybody more corrupt in this country like the former President. As the Speaker, I took Obasanjo on several issues of expenditure offences which he committed and could not show remorse.

“So, I don’t think he has the integrity to call anybody in the NASS corrupt. This is the man who became President with nothing and today he is one of the richest Nigerians, let him explain to Nigerians how he acquired the money.

”On his planned tenure elongation, I am aware that some monies was given to the national assembly members both the House of Representatives and the Senate.

“It was alleged that the Senators got 50 million each while 40 million was given to the House of Representatives members, some collected and some did not collect. But I am aware that money was distributed by Obasanjo,” he stated.

“For some weeks now, there has been controversy over what is called padding. As far as I am concerned, the National Assembly has the responsibility to pass the budget, approve it and allow the executive arm to execute it.

“According to my understanding, where the issue being referred to as padding comes into play is a situation where some members go behind and add items of expenditure to what has already been agreed upon, for either stealing the funds or doing whatever they feel like doing with it.

“But, this stealing of fund cannot be possible without the active connivance with some members of the executive arm.

“So far, accusations are being traded amongst members of the House. No investigation has been conducted.

“On the call for the resignation of the Speaker, the question is, what has the Speaker done to warrant his resignation?” He queried.

On whether padding was an offence, he said, “It all depends from what angle you look at it, I just told you that the responsibility of appropriation belongs to the national assembly.

“If padding is seen as an offence, it is when some members of the National Assembly decide to add items of expenditure through the back door after the budget has been passed by both houses. It, therefore, behoves on Nigerians to decide who represents them in the national assembly”.

Protect Christians Against Boko Haram – Islamic Group Begs Muslims

The Director, Muslim Rights Concern, MURIC, Ishaq Akintola, in a statement has called on Muslims across the country to help in protecting Christians against the recent threat by the new Boko Haram leader, Al- Barnawi that Christians and churches would be attacked.

MURIC describing Al- Barnawi’s threat as “despicable,” urged Muslims to “demonstrate solidarity with their Christian neighbours by ensuring that Boko Haram elements are not allowed to launch attacks on Christians in their neighbourhood”.

The statement reads in part, “The new leader of Boko Haram insurgents, Abu Mus’ab Al-Barnawi, has called for the killing of Christians and the blowing up of churches.

“The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) expresses total bewilderment at the depth of barbarism in the recent hate speech emanating from the leadership of Boko Haram. It is totally despicable and exceptionally criminal to target fellow products of the Adamic chromosome for annihilation. We have no doubt that this call could only have come from a twisted mind.

“Islam is love, not hatred. Islam gives life, not death. It builds and does not destroy. The Glorious Qur’an only allows Muslims to fight in self-defence (Qur’an 2:190). It forbids unjust and unlawful killing (Qur’an 6:151). It compares anyone who kills his fellow man to one who kills all homo sapiens (Qur’an 5:32).

“We remind the Boko Haram coercion ideologues of the moderate posture of the Glorious Qur’an towards non-Muslims. Qur’an 2:256 says there should be no compulsion in religion (Laa ikraahun fil diin).

“Qur’an 10:99 completely sweeps the carpet off the feet of agents of belligerence as it declares, “So you forcefully compel people to believe in Allah? But they would all have believed if Allah had wanted it so!”

“Our differences in matters of faith are therefore part of the deliberate and grand design of the Divine Creator. Allah also affirms in Qur’an 11:118 that there would still have been differences even if the whole world follows a single religion. So what is special about belonging to a particular religion if we do not share love?

“This is why Allah reminded Prophet Muhammad to limit his mission to reminding people and never to make any attempt at controlling people’s lives (Qur’an 88:21 – 22).

“MURIC charges Muslims all over the world to limit their religious zeal to the true dictates of Islam as reflected in the verses of the Glorious Qur’an lest they transgress. They should leave those who reject Islam alone. Our hypothesis is that Allah did not give anyone the assignment to punish those who reject Islam

“Finally, we urge Muslims in the country to demonstrate solidarity with their Christian neighbours by ensuring that Boko Haram elements are not allowed to launch attacks on Christians in their neighbourhood. We have a duty to defend our Christian neighbours at this critical stage. This is the way to keep Nigeria united.”
