DELTA @25: THE PEOPLE REACTS:

A REPORT ON DELTA STATE’ 20 YEARS CELEBRATION AS COMPILED BY OKOH GABRIELLA .

Delta State, alongside her neighbourhood state (Edo) is an offshoot of the deformed Bendel State. The big heart of the nation (Delta) was created on August 27, 1991, which now totals about 25 years of her existence.
The state which was among the nine states created by General I.B Banbangida on the aforementioned date is made up of 25 local government areas and several language speaking tribes and cultures.
The state has over the years gained notoriety as the home of both indigenes and foreigners. Her citizenry are not only known to be bound by congenial ties but also extends same to foreigners that visit or are resident in the state.
So far, Delta state has recorded four successive administrations of government. The first government which was headed by Felix Ibru (of blessed memory) was succeeded by that of Chief Onanefe Ibori. The third administration was under the leadership of Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan and presently that of Senator (Dr.) Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa.

As drums are being rolled out towards making the big heart of Nigeria’s 25 years anniversary, KARIFEST COMMUNICATIONS LTD hit some streets in Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State to sample people’s opinions on how far the state has come, the challenges that are besetting the present administration of government and what her citizenry expects from her in subsequent times.

Mrs. Nkem Okonta, a seamstress domiciled in Agbor, had these to say:
“That particular day of August 27th,1991 remains evergreen in my mind because that was the day I was delivered of my first son, Promise at the Central Hospital Agbor. This is the reason I am so passionate about the state’s anniversary even though I am not of its origin by birth but by marriage.
So far I mean at 25, I can say that the state is not doing badly at all, compared to the other states of its age or even those that are older. Despite all the challenges that she has been grappling with since immemorial, she has been able to break even in some aspects even if not all. I am sure that the present administration do not renege on her electioneering promises to the Deltans, the state will no doubt come top amongst states in the nation that have gained advancement technologically, economically and infrastructure wise.”

Mr. John Ntadi, a civil servant who works at Ika South Local Government council was of the opinion that the state has a lot of responsibilities on its sleeves before she can actually reach el-dorado.
According to him, the insecurity menace raging virtually in all parts of the state and present economic crunch precipitating the backlog of salaries she owes workers within her fold really leaves much to be desired.

As a student at the college of Education, Agbor, Miss Nora Monye disclosed that the previous administration in the state headed by Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan never lived true to its campaign promises to the people. Nevertheless she expressed optimism that the present administration of Senator (Dr.) A.I Okowa would make good its promises to Deltans.

A commercial motorcycle rider (Okoda) in Boji Boji Area metropolis, Fidelis Nnorom, when quizzed on the state of Delta at 25, opined that at 25, the state was still groping in darkness.
On the reasons for his assertion, the motorcyclist averred that a state that would place embargo on the use of motorcycle for commercial purpose, while it has not provided for a cognitive alternative is still at its toddling stage.
Speaking further, he posited that the Delta state government, under the administration of Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan placed a ban on the use of commercial motorcycle in the state, which he disclosed succeeded in some parts of the state but not in Agbor because he was unable to create alternative job opportunities for the teeming unemployed youths in the area. He described move by a sitting governor against the people who voted him into power as an act of man’s inhumanity to fellow man.

A salonist, Miss Onyekaah Iyeke, on her part, extolled Delta state at 25, pointing out that at 25 the state has really gone beyond most states that have been over 40 years of existence.
In her opinion, maturity as in the human, is not determined by age but by organization and comportment. She stated that if not for the economic recession staring the nation in the face, Delta state was not in reality be performing badly because for some years now, it has not been among the states grappling with how to offset the arrears of salaries owed workers within its employ.
