Buhari Has 11 Jets, Nigerian Olympic Soccer Team Shouldn’t Be Stranded In Atlanta – Ben Bruce

The lawmaker representing Bayelsa east senatorial district, the outspoken Senator Ben Murray-Bruce, has insisted that Nigerian soccer team should not be stranded in Atlanta when the president has 11 jets.

The Senator took to his Twitter account to suggest that the problem could have been avoided, pointing to the numerous Presidential jets available to President Buhari.

Mr. Bruce said: “I’m reading about the trouble our athletes have in getting to Rio for the Olympics. We have 11 presidential jets. This shouldn’t be an issue”

“1 or 2 of our 11 presidential jets could have been dedicated to #TeamNigeria to ease the difficulty facing them in getting to #RioOlympics,” he wrote on Twitter.

The Nigerian Olympic soccer team were stuck in Atlanta due to an unpaid bill to its chartered airline.

The delay meant the men’s team arrived in Brazil less than 7 hours before their opening match which they eventually won 5-4 against Japan.

“The Nigerian government [sports ministry] is responsible for booking the tickets for the team to travel but we heard there is a logistical mix-up with payments,” a source close to the Nigeria Football Federation told BBC Sport.

“The money paid by the ministry for the charter flight did not hit airline’s account on Tuesday so they refused to fly the team to Brazil.”

One of the players told BBC: “We’ve been told to get ready to fly out in few hours but that’s been the story since last week.”
