IMMIGRATION SCAM RECRUITMENT: SEE WHAT FORMER CG IS SAYING ABOUT THE EXERCISE

EFCC arrests former Minister of Interior Abba Morro
The immediate past Controller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, David Paradang has denied knowledge of the 2014 recruitment exercise, which resulted in the death of over a dozen applicants.

Paradang, who was Controller-General between June 2013 and August 2015 was testifying as the first prosecution witness in the trial of former Minister of Interior, Abba Moro.
Moro and three others are standing trial for an 11-count charge bordering on abuse of procurement process and diversion of public funds including N676 million they illegally collected from immigration job applicants.

They are accused of defrauding 676, 675 applicants of the sum of N676, 675, 000, being the aggregate of N1000 paid by each applicant to Drexel ahead of the recruitment.

Quite a number of applicants died following a stampede at some of the recruitment centres across the country. Despite the huge amount collected, the exercise was poorly organized across Nigeria resulting in deadly stampedes.

The Jonathan government received scathing criticisms for the incident, but it failed to discipline the officials behind the unfortunate exercise.

Over 200,000 job seekers scrambled through a poorly organized barricade at different stadiums across the country.

Testifying for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC on Wednesday, Tv360 reports that Paradang told a Federal High Court in Abuja that although he was aware that he had come to testify about the 2014 recruitment, he had no prior knowledge of the exercise.

The former Immigration boss said he was shocked by a publication informing Nigerians about the entrance exams. Paradang accused the former minister, Moro, who supervised the Nigeria Immigration, of hijacking the exercise. He said if Moro had informed him of his intention to recruit, the service had a delegated authority to recruit from a certain cadre to attend to such event.

Moro’s trial began Wednesday, after a long break following the stepping down of the former judge who handled the matter.

The Judge, Anwuli Chikere, stood down in April and the matter was reassigned to Justice Nnamdi Dimgba of the same court. Justice Chikere said she was resigning on personal grounds.

The case has been adjourned to Friday.
