The find - strange stone cylinders and what appeared to be cobblestones on the seafloor - set off speculation of a long-lost city built by ancient Greeks.
But it’s actually a natural formation, according to a new study published in Marine and Petroleum Geology.
Julian Andrews of the University of East Anglia told Smithsonian.com, ‘There’s no other evidence, nothing that suggests human civilization.
‘There’s no pottery, no coins, nothing else that usually goes along with these things.
Instead, Andrews’ team discovered, the stone structures are naturally occurring formations which form around sources of methane.
Zakynthos sits on an underwater oil field, Andrews says, and the odd shapes result from methane leaks - and microbes forming a mineral called dolomite which forms around them.
‘Essentially what you’ve got are bacteria that are fossilizing the plumbing system,’ Andrews said.
