SEE THE LIST OF 20 HAPPIEST AND SADDEST SONGS EVER

The extensive study was carried out by the Daily Mirror using data from Spotify's The Echo Nest project which provides figures on nearly every song available on the music streaming service.

One of the attributes available from The Echo Nest service is the ‘valence’ of a given song, a measure that describes how upbeat a track sounds. Spotify uses this data to generate playlists of songs that are (theoretically) sonically similar to each other.

According to The Echo Nest valence: “Describes the musical positiveness conveyed by a track. Tracks with high valence sound more positive (e.g., happy, cheerful, euphoric), while tracks with low valence sound more negative (e.g. sad, depressed, angry).
