QUESTIONS BEGGING ANSWERS AS US PREPARES TO SELL WAR EQUIPMENT TO NIGERIA

The Nigerian government is hoping to purchase up to 12 super Tucano attack aircraft from the United States of America to help in prosecuting the war against Boko Haram terrorist sect.

According to Reuters, the US government also intends to help Nigeria in intelligence gathering, surveillance and reconnaissance.

The US had for the past few years, refused to sell weapons to the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan over allegations of human right abuses being perpetrated by the Nigerian Army.

However, since the emergence of Buhari as the president of Nigeria, the US government has been supporting the nation diplomatically, especially in the fight against terrorism, corruption, and fuel scarcity.

While it remains to be seen how the US will assist Nigeria in fighting terror, the hypocrisy of the Obama administration in assisting the Buhari government – that has also been accused of human rights abuse, including the wanton killing of Shi’ite Muslims and IPOB members – and turning down the Jonathan administration for human rights abuses.

Perhaps, there’s more to this sudden goodwill by the US government, than meet the eye.
