But a new tattoo ink, developed by New York company Ephemeral, is designed to last a much more manageable period - one year, Robwaugh gathered.
The ink uses smaller molecules than normal tattoo ink, and can be ‘flushed out’ by a tattoo removal solution, which is tattooed over the design a year later.
The new ink is currently being tested on pigs, and won’t be available until 2017 at the earliest - but has already attracted interest from inventors.
The invention came about after CEO Seung Shin had a tattoo - and then had to have it removed by laser surgery.
Shin said, ‘Ephemeral was born through a personal experience of mine. Ever since I was young, I was always interested in tattoos but my parents were extremely against it, mostly because of its permanence.’
