POLICE INVESTIGATES USING CATS TO FIGHT CRIME

A police force aims to recruit its first police cat - which will serve alongside dogs in the battle against crime.

The unusual move comes after a five-year-old wrote to Durham police chief, Mike Barton, suggesting that the force could recruit cats.

According to Robwaugh, Inspector Richie Allen of the force’s dog support unit, has said that the force will use cats in an unspecified role.

Allen said, ‘I can confirm the force is looking into recruiting what we believe to be the first UK police cat. Their duties and responsibilities have not yet been agreed but if nothing else they will become the force mascot.

‘Of course, if it smells a rat we’ll expect it to catch it.’
Eliza Adamson-Hopper, 5 - who owns a cat called Mittens - wrote to the force asking why the police do not use cats.
