A new technique could offer hope to the millions of men who are watching their hair recede, grow thinner or fall out altogether.
The researchers unlocked the secrets of growing complex skin cells, complete with hair, and implanting them in skin.
Scientists have already transplanted the skin successfully into living mice.
Dr Takashi Tsuji of the Riken Centre for Developmental Biology said, ‘With this new technique, we have successfully grown skin that replicates the function of normal tissue.
‘Our study contributes to the development of bioengineering technologies that will enable future regenerative therapies for patients with burns, scars, and alopecia [baldness].’
‘We are coming ever closer to the dream of being able to recreate actual organs in the lab for transplantation, and also believe that tissue grown through this method could be used as an alternative to animal testing of chemicals.’
